At the risk of sounding like I really am all about tradition (which I am not, I am about what works best) I suggest you look at the first metal pickup, which in my mind is still the best, the DiMarzio Super Distortion.
By today's standards its output is no longer considered to be on the very high end of the scale but it is still fairly high. I have this pup in my Les Paul and anybody who tries it marvels at the great sound it has and is shocked to find out I have such an old school pup in it. Also bear in mind that output is only part of the equation. Slash has a pretty heavy tone and he uses old school low output AlNiCo pups.

Dave is also losing interest in EMGs. His Red Strat has not been his number one for quite some time now. He went back to the black Strat with traditional pups in it.
Also, Dave doesn't really count here anyway seeing that he doesn't do heavy metal.

+1

Mark Knopfler had also abandoned his interest in EMGs many long years ago. The last time he was seen playing the Pensa MK1 dates from circa 1993/94.

The MK2 Plus sports Fralin single coils, hardtail bridge assembly and passive electronics.

Aww come on, guys.
"Losing interest" today doesn't take anything off those sounds created with the help of EMG's back then.
Likewise, their journey (trip?) to EMG-worlds didn't take anything off the single coil sounds of before and after.
It's just 'there and back again'...

Looking forward to it GString, good choice on the white with EMGs, for 3 reasons

1) EMGs are Awesome! I recently put a set in my blacktop tele and couldn't be happier. There are some other people who disagree and thats cool, good on those people. But for something different thats also high output in a strat thats a great choice.

3) HSS option gives you some highgain awesomeness available on the H but also means older school metal tones (Maiden, Priest, YJM, Deep Purple) can be emulated with the SS (passive-purists, please note I said emulated, not trying to start a flame war). And also, because those single coils really push the front of an amp, that 5 and 4 position is killer for a blues tone on a clean tube amp (even though this is for metal....)

2) If you mount the battery in this spot there is minimal damage to the body required on a strat:

This means the only thing thats no reversible about the job is a small hole to get the battery wire into the pickup compartment.

Anyway looking forward to the mod.

Dan

Have you checked out Bill Lawrence’s L500 series? Not to be confused with the brand Bill Lawrence USA.

I haven’t tried the L500s myself, but have a couple of other of pups from the late Bill Lawrence (among them a set of micro coils that I just installed on a strat build in progress) and I’ve been very happy with them.

Awesome thanks for the input! I've been thinking about putting another bucker in it rather than the S/S, but this makes me want to keep it H/S/S . Also thanks for the battery tip! I'll keep you posted

I've never heard of these actually, I'll gladly take a look

New member here, I could really use some opinions! I'm starting a project strat that will be heavily moded metal strat. Active EMG's will be installed and I need help on if i should do the Whiteout or Blackout theme. Black is always the classic choice, but I almost think a whiteout strat that sounds like a monster would be pretty awesome and unique. Below are some pics to help you form an opinion, pictures of the pickups are below as well to help you imagine what they would look like installed. The Jim Root Strats were my inspiration for this, I want one but its way too pricey!

Later on I could look into installing black/white tuning machines on the headstock and maybe a black/white bridge or something.

Lastly, I would like to eventually remove the black dot inlays on the fretboard, I love the no inlay look. Is this a complicated job?

Fire Away! (suggestions welcome too!)

Whiteout: Fender Standard Strat HSS (arctic white w/ maple fretboard)

Blackout: Fender Blacktop Strat HH (black w/ maple fretboard)

I'm just sayin......

Aint nothing wrong with the HH option at all, that front Humbucker can come in handy for some sweet legato lead tones. I personally have a set of Dual Mode X EMGs in my tele, so I can get the single coil AND the humbucker sound. But you'll still want that 2 and 4 sound for the strat. So maybe a Set of Dual Modes X with a Single in the middle......

Just options just options :)

*edit* the dual modes come in white :)

The OP wants an HSS setup for his white Strat, not HSH. The body is not routed for a neck humbucker.

Thanks for the suggestion, though!

I am just not a fan of EMG's, but if you like them go for it.

Too right chrome, don't know what I was thinking GString.
