Many thanks for all your replies.

I think I will go for the MIM HSS and a Fender Mustang amp.

If later I decide to get a Les Paul is it possible to replace the Humbucker in the HSS with a single coil?

It certainly is!
You'd need a replacement scratchplate, and you'd need to be able to solder, but it's relatively easy to do.

I can't see it being mentioned in this thread, but you could always get a HSS where the bucker is split. This let's you switch between the strat being a HSS or SSS.

This is usually done by having one of the volume or tone knobs being attached to a push/pull pot. When you pull the pot one of the single coils that make up the humbucker is disengaged, making it a singlecoil.

Granted most of the guitars with this option don't have the humbucker slanted, like then bridge pup nf a regular SSS usually is. But you could always get a pickguard where the space for the humbucker is slanted.

The split coil option works best for the out of phase sounds anyway so the angle is not as crucial. Split coils don't sound as good as regular single coils to my ears so I would likely never want to run only one half of a bridge bucker by itself anyway. Typically they will choose a bucker somewhere on the relatively low end of the output scale in order to achieve a reasonable overall balance with the singles. Half of a low output bucker is prolly not the best sounding pup to be used all by itself. Best to use split coils for quack only (bridge & middle) if you ask me and for that purpose the angle is not very crucial.

I've read somewhere that Mr. Jimi used Fender amps in the studio.

To my feeble ears there is no way the studio version of Hey Joe was played on a Marshall.

Key word here...."studio". I do not recall the OP asking what Hendrix used in the studio, nor do I know how anyone can confirm what he used for any specific song(s). What we do have to wit is what he used live...

No. A Strat cannot be used for hard rock.

...Just joshing! A Strat can be used for anything. Most versatile guitar ever made IMHO. And anything that can't be done well with a standard S/S/S can be done with a variant.

Lots of hard rockers use SSS. But they usually change their pickups to rails. First that comes to mind in Iron Maiden.

Yeah, but I could have sworn I seen him (and others) play with rail pickups. I think DiMarizo are the ones to go for metal pickups.

It might depend on the degree of "hardness" of the hard rock but almost every hard rocker that uses a strat has at least a gibson style HB in the bridge position. I am sure however there are some exceptions.

That makes all the sense in the world.... I had a bunch of strat parts laying around, so one day I decided to put everything together. All I was missing were pickups but I also had some Gibson pickups. I purchased a single HB pick guard on ebay and installed it. That thing was incredibly loud. I'm not much into Heavy Metal more into classic rock, so it just sits there. I made the mistake of painting it like EVH schema. Tried to sell it on EvilBay and got red flagged for patent offense. Can't believe you can patent a bunch of stripes, that were ripped off to begin with (but I'm not soar). :)

It might have been how you listed it. I see cheapo guitars on Ebay with EVH stripes now and then. Unless Eddie really expects to get a cut anytime someone tries to sell a guitar with stripes painted on it? Who knows but I guess someone must have complained to ebay if they red flagged it.

I took it as a compliment. I did such a good job that he got jealous. Even spoke to someone in his organization, telling them I'm not a business out to make a buck. Just trying to get rid of unused guitars. Oh well, it still looks cool in the corner. Not a big EVH fan (after I grew up).
