A few months ago I purchased a really road worn '76 Strat in blonde with black pickguard. The guitar plays and sounds great, but one thing happened I had never counted on. The neck is pretty fat and round. This agrivated my left hand. I'm left handed, but play right handed. I've had problems with fatique when I write, but now, I'm having problems playing for long periods of time.

I also play bass ('51 P-bass). It too, has a very big neck. after going to see a doctor, I'm in a wrist brace with instructions not to use my left hand too much for at least a week.

I'm left handed! How am I going to not use my left hand! The worst part of all of this is that I'm always picking up a guitar and I play in church.

I'm being good and not playing. I wear the brace 24/7 and I'm applying heat. I hope that this clears up soon.

Any advice?

Give the strat to me and then you won't be tempted to play it.

What was your physician's diagnosis, Paris?

Here is some advice...follow you Doc's instructions to the "T". And use this time away from playing to just take a break. You'll really want to play when that brace comes off...but ease back into it or you may find yourself right back where you started.

And a week is not that bad...spent 8 months in a hot, dry, schithole getting shot at every other day and didn't even see a guitar! You CAN do this week standing on your head!

Heal, as you are doing. Everyone has their windows where life gets in the way of playing.

I tend to play every day but there has been spats where I could not for a few days for whatever reason and I found I actually played better after the break. Just practice in your mind...some claim that works. Granted if you go too long without playing I would never claim that is a substitute for practicing. But there is such a thing as over doing it. Your body usually tells you when you are.

There is a product call "Tiger Balm", it is a Chinese herbal ointment that I find really work wonders.
It does have a slight warming effect but nothing like say Ben !@$, it also has a nice cinnamon smell, that is useful in the cold season as a chest rub.

Anyway, is helps to reduce swelling and has some pain killing to it as well. Just remember that a little goes a long way with this stuff.

Most of the drug store chains carry this.

You'll survive Paris.

I have had several enforced breaks from playing.
They are, in order, due to chemotherapy (by the nature of the way chemo works my skin could not cope with the physical demands playing placed on my fingertips - I had the all clear a good few years ago), an injury to one of my fingers (heavy object, doorway, helpful idiot jumping in to assist without thinking), a broken vertebra in my neck (car shunt - bone didn't heal right, so I ended up having an operation to refracture the vertebra and then have a titanium plate screwed across five vertebrae to stabilise the area).

I eventually returned to playing in all cases.
I guess I'll stop when I turn my toes up.

Rest well my friend, and you'll be back playing before you know it.
You might be well served to consider the way you hold and play the instrument, and change the things that aggravate your condition.
