Hi all

I'm about to buy my first Strat. I'm primarily a bassist, but I've decided to play more guitar.

As I'm buying a Strat and Tele (sold my old Tele to upgrade) I'm getting a good deal on a Strat.

I've been offered a 60th Comm Strat for the same price (brand new ordered in) as an American Standard. This would both be the latest models, (obviously with the 60th!).

What are your thoughts on which makes the better classic Strat?

Cheers

The neck alone is so different (the AmStandard has 9.5" radius, the 60Comm a compound 9.5"<14" radius, plus the finish is different) that you will almost surely prefer one over the other. So: go play both and find out.

The 60th Commemorative is adorned with gold-plated parts, Schaller straplocks and a contoured heel.

For the 60th Commemorative model Fender chose a different route rather than releasing a separate American Standard or Deluxe version as they did 10 years ago: they incorporated the key elements from three different guitars.

I'm primarily a bass player as well (no instrument vibrates and resonates through your body like a bass) this is the decision I made - I got both!

On the question, the answer lies in the definition of the word 'classic' which is becoming a tad more difficult. For this old man, a classic Strat, in terms of year of issue, is a 50's era guitar. For other's it may be a 60's. Gruhn, in a recent magazine article has eschewed CBS era instruments, but there are players who like them. I would also give some cred to the VRI's of the Dan Smith era. I swapped out my '57 Vintage Hot Rod, which was my nod to that era, for a new 60th Anniversary American Vintage '54.

In my case I got the American Standard with the ash body. For some the alder body might be considered classic. The 60th Anniv. has a compound radius finger board so it is not classic. My American Deluxe has the same radius so I'm comfortable with that, not something I really notice a difference in. Instead of using the word "classic," I'll say that for me the quintessential Strat is ash body, maple neck, maple finger board. My LTD ST-213 is constructed the same way. To my ears that construction yields the sound a Strat should make through an amp. Don't get me wrong, I still like my alder-bodied American Deluxe and G&L S-500 axes.

All my Strats have solid maple necks and alder bodies.

-'89 Clapton
-'87 Clapton Prototype
-'08 FSR American Deluxe VG
-'08 Gilmour
-'13 60th Anniv American Vintage '54

Depends on the amps available, the venue(s) available to play in and why I'd have to pick.
Sort of like the old question, "Which one would you grab if your house was on fire , ..."
my answer would be, "The closest one to the nearest exit!"

Regrettably Fender.....My choice would have to be the Les Paul my wife bought me 11 years ago.
