Fret Sprout was a more immediate problem for many of us during the winter months, but it can occur any time the humidity is low in your guitar room.

Here's StewMac's Trade Secret on it:
http://www.stewmac.com/How-To/Online_Resources/Neck_Building_and_Repair_and_Setup/Fixing_fret_ends_that_stick_out_in_dry_weather.html

Dry weather blues File back those pesky fret ends!

When the weather gets dry, our customers call me crying, “OUCH! The frets are sticking out on the sides of my guitar neck!”

So this is what I tell ’em...Erick Coleman, January, 2007

Basically he uses two file types - Three Corner and Fret End dressing files.

It's a good tutorial for this problem.

- Dan

For anybody with little to no experience on fretwork: protect the neck and fretboard, otherwise you will get unwanted scratches.
(Mr. Coleman is a pro, but I bet even he does it in any other than promotional work  )

I used to apply clear coat nail polish on the edges of fretboards where it meets the frets, that tiny brush works perfect and it creates an extra layer of smoothness :)
