From the Fender given specs:
Model Name: Standard Stratocaster®

This is essentially the same guitar that is now still called a Standard, and are now made in Mexico, aka "Mexican Standard". It is not an American Standard by any stretch of the imagination, and is not called that by Fender.

That being said, it is a great guitar, just like a Standard of today, but not quite like an American Standard. $299 is not bad for a Standard in good shape, and the fact that this one is stamped "Made in USA" (legitimately) is a nice bonus. Rare? Maybe. That probably means nothing as far as resale.

I think that it is a fine guitar and I would keep it and play it. 8)

Try to keep up. He paid $799 for it, not $299. You still think he should keep it?

So rare things don't go up in resale value? Got anything rare you want to sell cheap? 8)

Hmmm, it seems that $799 was added (edited) after I posted, I only remember a mention of $299. Maybe I just missed it, so thanks for the correction.

Then no, it is waaaaay overpriced, return it. :(

Rare does not always mean valuable. Sometimes things are rare because they suck. A Standard Strat is not going to go up in value, made in USA or not. I make something rare everyday and flush it down the toilet, no two are alike. How much rare crap do you want?

If only two of something exists and only one person wants one, the value isn't going to go up.

Well I think a particular Fender Strat they only made for one year like that is rare and hence in the future should go up in value. As far as a crap those are not so rare as I got my own coming out daily and have to deal with it coming out of both ends of some people. 8)

That's the main point I think, for the money you paid you can get a proper full fat US std. Why would you spend the same on a 'pretend' US strat?

Thanks for all the input everyone. I just got back from returning the American MADE Standard Stratocaster to Guitar Center. They went down to $100 off. But after all this research and insight, it just didn't make sense anymore.

If anyone wants to pick it up, you can get it now at the Guitar Center in Brooklyn, NY.

The search for my first axe continues...

Sounds like something that should be developed into a plot line for PBS's "Antiques Roadshow".
