I recently purchased this model Strat and love it. However, I believe it comes standard with lighter, 9g strings and I prefer a little heavier gauge. I attempted to string it with a set of 10-52g strings. But to get it in tune, this gauge pulls the tremolo bridge up to the full extension of the springs. Is it not possible to use strings this heavy on this model?

You may need to tweak the setup and/ot install the extra Tremolo springs.

cheers!

Thanks! I was surprised that this model does not come with extra springs.

There should be extra springs in the large bag with all the accessories; if not you can pick them up at a dealer. You may or may not need extra springs when going from .009s to .010s but you definitely will need to adjust the tremolo springs.

Nope. Bought this online at Zzounds. Factory sealed bag with everything but springs. They are not listed on the packing slip either. It came with 3 installed. Don't see how they can be adjusted any further.

You can screw the two trem-claw screws in to tighten the springs, lowering the bridge. Re-tune and re-adjust the claw screws until balance is achieved.

+1

Be sure to check your string height and intonation after adjusting the trem claw.

Yep. I bought a new American Standard and set it up with 10s as soon as I got it home. I adjusted the trem height to my liking , adjusted the string height to my liking , relief , etc. Checked innotation and called it done. Not really hard at all.

Since you are changing string thickness, I would take the guitar to a trusted luthier (not Guitar Center). I would have the guitar properly set up, but I would also add that the nut may need to be altered a little bit. I say this for two reasons.

1. I've owned many new Strats and Teles. Sometimes the nuts are slotted improperly out of the factory.

2. Changing string thickness sometimes requires the nut to be reshaped to accommodate the new string thickness.

As you may or may not know, tuning issues usually starts with the nut. When people are tuning, the moment they hear that metal "clink" sound, that means the string is getting caught on the nut, causing guitars which do not stay in tune.

My most recent purchase is a '75 Strat. The past owner replaced the bone nut with a brass nut (very popular in the '70s and '80s). Every time I would retune -- "CLINK!" Beside new frets, this really nice guitar is getting a new bone nut.
Remember, the tension on stings, on the guitar's neck, is an engineering balancing act. When you alter one thing, it generally alters everything else.

Same here, got mine from Zzounds last week without extra springs but my springs weren't that weak. I screwed them in some more, 2 1/2 turns each and the bridge is set flatter now. My bridge was also set high as you described.
