It's only since I stopped smoking I've realised how nicotine-stained my old Strat has become. This weekend's task is replacing the browned pickguard and pickup covers. Looking at the old and the new side by side is a stark reminder of the perils of nicotine.

Very authentic look Frank! Nothing says Relic like a long Nicotine bath! :D

How are your lungs? I quit, again, 14 months ago.

My history is to smoke for 5 years or so, quit for 7, repeat.

Filthy, smelly habit, health ruining, life shortening, skin wrinkling and Oh so Sophisticated!

Authentic it may be but it just looks disgusting. I quit over a year ago and I find I can walk up hills now without having to stop halfway.

I used an e-cig for a couple of months then quit entirely. If I ever feel the need for nicotine again then I'll use the e-cig, my days of smoking are gone for good.

The other candidate for transplant surgery ... this one's actually worse.

Ya know it's not just the "Scratchplate" that's infused with color and aroma. :P

I know that. Being white (once) it's the most obvious though, and the most easily replaced. I've got two sets of pickup covers too. And the knobs and switch tips will be replaced in due course.

Yuck! Imagine what it does to your lungs. Congrats on quitting! :)

BTW, despite what Rogers Waters says, it is not the nicotine that stains, it's tar.

Yup, the tar is the nasty brown stuff. Nicotine itself is colourless.

Just a thought, I could sell those pics to anti-smoking campaigners.

I was just about to post that it's tar that causes the discolouration - nicotine is both colourless and odourless.

Well done Frank for staying clean for a year - I've been clean for 5 years, 1 month and 1 day today.
My stopping was helped by medical intervention - I had to stop because I went into hospital for an operation (I had a fractured vertebra due to being shunted in my car).
The analgesics I had following the operation wiped me out, so stopping was relatively easy, as I was off my face for quite a while afterwards.

I still class myself as a smoker, but I choose not to imbibe.

All plastic parts turn discolored when they age.
But don't get me wrong, I absolutely and totally agree with Mr. Mackey from South Park:

Uh, smokin's bad, m'kay

I like the brown pickguard better, you should keep smoking.

GF, you should be able to sell those discolored plastic parts without much effort. A lot of people want that look!

I've shown this picture before. From bottom to top, we have a 1964, a 1974, a new parchment and a new Mexican white. I was never a smoker.

If I thought for one moment I could order new lungs on ebay then I'd consider it.

I know, it's the fashion at the moment to have a brand new guitar that looks like the owner has been outside of his bedroom with it. Call me unconventional but I want my guitars to actually look good.

It's not what it does to the plastic parts that's bad, it is what it does to the electronics and your health that is bad. That also why keeping it in the case when not playing is best. Pollution in the air even if you don't smoke.
