I have a 1988 American Standard in pewter finish. Mint condition too. Awesome guitar. Just installed Lace Gold pickups with the TBX mod and all I can say is Wow!!! Playing through my Marshall JVM410HJS it sounds great! I can get so many different tones, anything from standard single coil to hot humbuckers. The harmonics are fantastic. Very pleased. Tomorrow my new surf green Jeff Beck Stratocaster gets here. I love NGDs:)

The TBX circuit was already present on the guitar, affecting the middle/bridge pickups.

The only mod you did was to rewire the TBX as a master tone control in the first tone knob and drop the master MDX mid boost circuit in the second knob.

Oh ok. What I installed was a loaded pick guard where PUs and wiring was already done. That way I could keep the original PG and pickups together incase I ever want to reinstall.

The MDX circuit is an active midrange booster offering 25dB of gain. It adds more spice in your tone. The TBX compensates the lack of highs when the MDX is cranked up.

You tell us you've dropped a preloaded pickguard. In the case of the Clapton mod you'll need the PCB from the Elite circuitry and a 9V battery to drive the preamp.

Unless you popped out a loaded guard from a Strat Plus, which is a completely passive setup without the Elite electronics.

Yes this has the battery and boost. Sorry I just don't know the proper terms. So I guess it has all. Both the MDX and TBX? Maybe that's what they mean by the 920D mod that this has? When I bought the loaded pickguard they said it had the Clapton mod. When I have the middle tone knob on 5 is sounds more like a humbucker or warmer than a single coil. When the bottom tone knob is run up it increases volume, drive and sustain. I think it sounds great.

The Clapton mod has both the TBX and MDX circuits.

Here's an article about the TBX circuit:

Unlike the TBX the MDX requires a battery in order to function properly.

In your place I would exchange the rosewood neck for a 1-piece maple.

(though I imagine ZZDoc's swift reaction!   )

I like rosewood. Not really after an Eric Clapton clone guitar. Even though with the Lace PUs with the Clapton mod and pewter finish I'm only a maple neck away:) If I ever do want one I will just get one of his signature Strats that have the maple neck. When my Beck Strat. gets here tomorrow I may or may not keep the Hot Noiseless PUs in it. May like them, may not. Just have to listen and play it for awhile.

Jeff's personal stage guitar is actually different than the regular and custom shop versions Fender produces.

Image

1. The pickups are not the dual coil ceramic noiseless types but a set of custom-wound stacked humbuckers built by John Suhr.

2. The neck is not the thin C profile but a fat baseball bat style from a midnight purple '93 attached into an olympic white '95 body.

3. The nut is the old Wilkinson split roller type instead of the LSR.

I know. But the current JB model still seems like a great Stratocaster. Almost like a Deluxe I guess but the Deluxe didn't come in the color I wanted. The beauty of pickups are they can easily be switched out. I bought the Beck because I wanted a Stratocaster with a nice tremolo set up. Plus it came in Surf Green:) Also played an Eric Johnson that I liked. Heck I like them all! Including my 57 RI R7 Les Paul. It has a nice fat neck. I don't seem to have a problem going from one neck size and type to the other though.

Tha American Deluxe V-Neck Strat is available in Surf Green. Alas, it's only offered with a 1-piece maple neck (since you're a huge fan of rosewood fingerboards).

Except the HSH model all American Deluxe Stratocasters are featured with an S1 switch.

Didn't know that on the color on the Deluxe. Oh well what's done is done and I hope I am happy with the JB. If not I will return in and possibly get the Deluxe or something else. I'm sure the JB will be great though. Don't get me wrong I like maple necks just fine. Its just a preference thing. Matters of fact the next Strat I buy I want Olympic White and a maple neck. Might just get a Standard or get the EC model.
