I have an American Strat with an HSH configuration. I recently had the stock pups replaced with Lace Hot Golds with the overwound Hot Gold in the bridge position. I didn't do the work myself, I had a local luthier do the job as I've had him work on several of my guitars in the past and was pleased with his work.

Everything seems fine except there is a considerable drop in volume in position 4. It's so noticeable that I don't use that position. Position 5 seems fine as do all the rest. I realize that position 4 splits the coils on the neck pup as does position 2 with the bridge pup. I don't know if the difference would be accounted for by the fact that my bridge pup is the overwound "hotter" Lace Hot Gold, or if there is a way in which the neck and middle pup could have been wired wrong to produce this drop in volume.

Anyone have any insights? I really don't want to take the guitar in unless I'm pretty sure there's a problem as I gig with it every week and I'd hate to have to do without it unless it's really necessary.

Edit: I checked and the coil closest to the neck is on with the middle pup in position 4 and the coil closest to the bridge is on with the middle pup in position 2...if that helps.

The job of your luthier is not only to fix your guitar properly it is to answer to your question.

He could have made a mistake with wiring .

If he could not answer to you , now you came here.

Do you have the schematic or layout he use to do the wiring ?

What is your guitar model ? American Standard ? American Deluxe .....

This is the Blacktop Stratocaster HSH

Is yours switch is like that ? Or you have the "super Switch " ?

Take it back to the luthier. It must be something he overlooked. I do pup swaps for people all the time and would be held responsible if it left my shop like that. I always check output levels in all positions before reassembly and if I notice very low output in any position find out why. If it is a bad pup or part I let the customer know before I finish the job and take it from there. A few times it was my fault as they had that plastic import switch and the contacts are held in place by a plastic "weld" on the case. It turns out I was overheating them with the iron and was an easy fix. And I learned to use lower heat and solder much quicker on those types of switches. Not to say this is what happened here but is an example of how it can sometimes be something the tech did wrong even though he is qualified.
