Hey guys.

In 8 hours im supposed to go view a supposed Fender stratocaster. Seller claims he doesn't know a lot about it, and the bid is only 300$. It looks a lot like a David Gilmour strat, but the pictures aren't the best of quality. Its a relic(ed) strat, but the back of the neck looks different than most relics i've seen.

Seller claims its a guitar from the 80's, 90's, and says it doesn't have any identifying marks on the back. I noticed one sticker seems to not line up with the fender decal... is this an indication it might be a fake? Or is 300$ a risk you would take?

Thank you all in advance for reading this and for the replies!

With kind regards from Amsterdam ;)

It's fake!
The Fender decal isn't even on straight.

Thanks for the reply. Are you sure? How can you tell?
I got my suspicions too, but if it proved to be a real one i'd have myself a great guitar for little money!

Ah, it needs to be in line with the angel of the headstock cut huh? Sure this isn't a thing they did years ago?

(if it sounds too good to be true... but it could be... life's hard sometimes, haha!)

It's so hard to buy a guitar without trying before buying.

It still "might" be a good player?

Might be, but got plenty of guitars already. Don't want a fake in my collection i take a lot of pride in, as you would probably understand! :)

Seller's playing dumb, but also says;
"plays a lot like my road worn 60' strat of 1200$, but I don't even know if this is a fender or not."

If the seller doesn't even trust it to be a real strat... too good to be true it is then. Thanks guys

(will keep monitoring this thread though. If someone finds something to prove it isn't a fake, or to learn of other tell-tale signs :) )

... it usually is too good to be true.
And it is in this case.
Look at the end of the word Stratocaster, and you'll see that it aligns differently with the rest of the decal, and it happens to be in the correct alignment.
Now Fender have had quality control issues in the past, but getting the decals to sit straight isn't one of the problems they've had.

The wear on the back of the neck is completely overdone when compared with the wear on the fingerboard, another one of those poorly done "relicing" jobs (aka the not so subtle art of ruining the finish on a perfectly serviceable guitar).

The pictures are in truth too poor to say further than that.

I wouldn't bother wasting my time going to even look at the guitar if I were you.

Thanks folks, saved me a lot of time and gas. I think the seller knew full well that it's a fake, he seems to know a lot about guitars, (he can even name the brand of the tuners on it) but then doesn't know if its a real one... yeah right...

But now i know for sure! Thanks again :)

It's a mongrel. Bright and dusty metal parts for one thing. I wonder about the neck alignment for another. Gilmour??? Hardly. $300...Remember there's no such thing as a free lunch. Keep us posted.

"Now Fender have had quality control issues in the past, but getting the decals to sit straight isn't one of the problems they've had".

It sure is at the Fujigen factory!
I got my 1968 reissue shipped from there and the stratocaster part of it was 5 times more kinked than that
I accepted it thinking that it might make it a little more valuable over time (being an oddity) , but after a month, it was bugging the hell out of me and I hated the poorly done tint on the neck , so had it refinished with a transitional logo applied

There is also a black spot under the sunburst finish on the back which has clearly been sprayed over and when I got it , the neck was misaligned (so no brownie points for QC from me )

Looks like the time worn phrase 'made in Japan' hasn't completely lost its 'lack lustre.'

The truss rod hole in the headstock does seems to be a modern American neck. Also the 12th fret marker positions point to USA. Of course we can never be sure about the rest without closer inspection and dissection.

However what it seems to me is someone went and reliced the crap out of a later model Fender neck and also poorly installed a vintage style decal, vintage tuners of some type, and a non roller string tree to a modern neck which is all wrong (unless it is some kind of signature model)... but if the rest of it is legit would be worth $300 granted if you did not know how to restore it yourself would be costly or you would just have to live with the wrong ugliness.

Before touching that thing, I'd want a doctor's statement that the back of the neck coloration isn't due to the bubonic plague.

Don't know where you scraped this one up Arth but IMHO the sad owner of this hand has been up on Mount Everest or someplace similar.
