You did well, it's probably worth twice that now.

Well it is serving its purpose for me....as a practice acoustic lol. But its "worth" is not really a concern for me. I have gotten several Squires for free over the years, some I can't even recall where from. But this one did just hit 20 years old. Maybe...who knows.... in 50+ years they will be collectors items and sell for 100 bucks lol.

Not sure if mine is plywood since it is a few years newer but it does play nice, excellent neck and sounds fine...that is until I plug it into an amp or board.

I had a cheap Kramer KS400 that was made of plywood.

It had tuning stability problems but the tone wasn't bad.

That neck looks so wrong on that body. But what the heck if it was cheap and sounded good I can't imagine tuning stability problems being that hard to fix. As far as plywood I guess from what I have been reading that it is not as bad as some think as a "tone wood". I am starting to think the term "tone wood" in itself is a farce as I have heard aluminum guitars that sounded good. My take is the type of wood plays a part but a small part when dealing with a solid body electric. It is the sum of everything and every factor even down to the player that effects tone. SRV did not play anything special but an old pawn shop beater...he just used super fat stings with high action and had fingers like superman....and I am sure his choice of amplification did not hurt.

Gents,

Thanks for taking the time to have a look. I took the neck off and scratch plate and bingo - ply wood, cheap electrics and no markings whatsoever. Disappointing especially as I know that is was bought from a reputable local guitar shop as a US stratocaster. But there you are! I think I will re- string it, set it up and have some fun with it! At the very least it makes a pretty ornament in my living room and I have learnt a lot about fender stratocasters!

Thanks again!

Alex

Discovering a guitar isn't what you thought it was must be a big disappointment. If the store was really reputable then they'd certainly have known or at least suspected a forgery, popped the neck and realised it was a fake. Unfortunately you're a bit late to be asking for a refund now.

I wouldn't feel all that bad. It's something you can pick up and play anytime.
I had a cheap acoustic that I paid $30 dollars for. I went to tune it up, and one of the plastic knobs broke off. I bought some Martin strings and a set of Golden Age tuners and although it didn't have a sweet acoustic tone, it played well and stayed in tune. It was my daily picker upper for about 2 years and I regret selling it.

Agree..try to look at the bright side. It is something you don't have to worry about and care for had it been an older legit USA or MIJ so as long as it plays you can do what I do with mine. Keep it around as a beater to practice. I never clean it, I never put it in a case, I sometimes sleep with it, if it falls or gets dinged I don't care, heck I think I only replaced the strings one time since I got it back in 08 ish. And I actually like the neck enough that it might find use one day if I end up with an extra loaded body of better quality that needs a neck. Then I can eBay the old loaded body as a "vintage" squire for 30-50 bucks, maybe more if it is a sucker bid lol.
