Hi Everybody,

Happy Independence Day!

I have a 2011 American Deluxe Strat and noticed for the first time when bending the strings, in particular the lower e string the bridge moves up and down and I do not recall seeing that when I first purchased my guitar.

Is this normal?

Thanks in advance for any help provided!

The strings pull the bridge to one direction, the tremolo springs resist this pull. When you throw the bridge off balance by bending the strings (= pulling more to this direction), the springs on the other side stretch and the bridge moves.

You may now have more strength in your fingers, the springs may be getting slacker, or you just didn't take your eyes off your fingers before
Might be time for a setup, especially if the guitar goes out of tune when bending.

With a floating bridge, it is normal for the bridge to move when bending strings, normal that it goes out of tune when bending strings, and no amount of setup will change this. Using five springs to stiffen the bridge will minimize, but not eliminate the bridge movement.

+1

Blocking the bridge altogether will also help, but at the expense of a usable tremolo.

I'll rephrase my previous statement:

Thanks for all the advice! Think I will try a couple more springs and a set up. I just have never noticed this before until practicing a couple weeks ago and now it's bugging the heck out of me.

Jim, be sure to put a little dab of lube in each slot at the nut and on the bottom of the string tree's retainers. Friction and binding there might also be a factor.

If you changed string size you'll need to re adjust the springs.
