If you have an ipad with a lightning port I just picked up one of these ...

But then you'd be doing your recording on the ipad rather than the pc.

Looks great! But no iPad here, I know, I know, laptops are considered cumbersome in today's world. Luckily, I don't move it much. :D

I feel like a caveman, with strings on his club and an echo from the cave.

My music kind of reflects that, gritty blues/rock with a touch of sweetness that holds the promise of a better world...or some such nonsense. 8)

This has been an interesting thread for me, all comments appreciated. - Dan

Reaper is a very decent program and works well
with most plug-ins. You might want to optomize
your PC for recording with whatever you decide to
go with.

Good luck!

Thanks for the "About" reference and Reaper DAW, Mike.

The computer is good to go, 4GB DDR3 and I have over 500GB available on an external drive.

The Reaper reads like a superior product, I'm assuming it works with Windows 8. Still waiting for their forum to register me, how does it work around Latency?

They say "works with any audio interface", what are you using?

There's a fairly wide range of interfaces out there and most do a pretty good job. I'd start with something very basic but decent quality from someone like Focusrite or MOTU. It sounds to me that you really only need a 2x2 input (one vocal and one guitar simultaneously).

There's been a lot of talk about latency, which is the delay between what you sing or play and what gets recorded. Most interfaces give you the choice of monitoring your pre-processed signal or your post-processed signal. You'll only hear the latency if you monitor the post processed signal. But latency generally comes from one of two places. One major culprit is the connection between your audio interface and the computer, so you want to get the fastest one you can such as a Firewire or USB. However, the bigger culprit is the computer itself. Make sure you have a decently powerful processor, plenty of memory, and a high speed disk drive.

I haven't found a single recording interface so far that works with Windows 7 64-bit and USB 3.0.
I happen to have a laptop that does not have any USB 2.0 ports, only 3.0. Apparently they will all work with Windows 8, where USB 3.0 drivers are native and part of Windows, but not Windows 7 where all USB 3.0 drivers are third party and can't run ring 0.

So I'm doing my recording on a stationary PC with Firewire and a MOTU Ultralite. That works, but it would have been nice if someone made a Windows 7 USB 3.0 compatible interface.

Tascam US-1800 and I use it with Win7/Reaper and
with Logic Pro on an iMac. No latency issues at all, but
16GB RAM and 1TB HD onboard.

From what I've learned over the last couple of days you've got a pretty upscale home recording set-up there.

Of course that's just "Ficken Cheed" for the studio quality rigs.

Does your 16GB of Ram (which is a lot!) help with the latency issue?

sheesh, I started this with a crummy Zoom H2 blues idea rhythm track.

Then started working out some "Lead" lines.

"Why not double track" I thought!

Yes. I started with an old Revox reel-to-reel.

I would recommend Studio One 2, Tracktion and Reaper. Free/demo versions avail for each. 8)

I think I'll go with the Reaper recommendation, thanks.

The issue now is an economical Audio Interface with low/zero latency. Leaning towards M-Audio's M-Track.

What do I do for a drum track? Generic 12 bar blues has got to be available online.

I did 3 tracks of my "C#m Blues", 2 rhythm and a lead, one at a time. Played the previous take on 'puter speakers and recorded with the live on the Zoom and, as expected, it was godawful and cumbersome.

It was incentive to do it right the next time, a bit too down & dirty for me. Sounded like a tuba band in the bathroom hallway! :P

Reaper has a 64-bit version that runs under Windows 8. I've got it installed here but I rarely use it, I've always preferred Cubase and Reason.

Yep, saw that, selling point for me, I'm running 64 bit and Win 8.1.

BTW, if anybody has Win 8 don't "upgrade" to 8.1. Microsoft just wants to be your sole source provider and "One Note", if it's forced on you, CAN be turned off! :D

I'm running Win8.1 and I like it a lot now I've installed Classic Shell to get rid of the useless start screen.
