Hey there!

I'm wanting to do some custom wiring for a HSS strat I've got. It's pretty similar to the standard S-1 system Fender uses for HSS strats, but there are some small differences. I understand how the super switch works for the most part, but the S-1 switch starts to confuse me with the complex stuff. Here's what I'm shooting for:

A = neck, B = middle, C = inner bridge coil, D = outer bridge coil
S-1 off (I know how to wire this up):
1. C + D
2. B || (C + D)
3. B
4. A || B
5. A

S-1 on (I get confused with this and the S-1 part):
1. (A + B) || (C + D)
2. (A + C) || B
3. A + B
4. A || B || C
5. A || C

In addition to this, I'm also trying to wire one tone pot for regular master treble cut, and the other for master bass cut.

Can anyone help me out? I've looked over various diagrams online and nothing seems to be this setup 100%, and I can only get so far without fully understanding how to maximize the S-1's abilities.

I have never found a reason to cut bass on a guitar but if you want that kind of tonal control it is generally done with some kind of active eq. If you want to do it passive (no battery and circuit board) you can look this one over and see if you understand it...

One of the hardest things to sit down and figure out is complex series/parallel switching. People often start threads asking if a certain combination of coils and pickups in various permutations of series and parallel can be done and no one ever gets quite the answer they want.

To get anywhere near the combinations specified would take hours of work looking at the number of available poles on the 5-way and S1 switches and even then it's very unlikely that you'll get exactly the switch positions specified.

Sorry, but it's a lot of work with no guaranteed outcome. My advice - stick with the stock S1 options!

Just to throw a spanner in the ointment (to mix a few metaphors) ... here's my favourite series/parallel switch schematic. I did this on a Squier Strat many years ago.

Well, that sure told me it's a badly designed 4PDT switch.

In 20 minutes.

Thanks for the advice guys, but I actually figured it out by looking at Fender's diagrams and some diagrams made by Andybighair. It wasn't easy though. :roll:

Can someone just do me a favor? I don't know which color wires I'm supposed to put where for my DiMarzio humbucker. In my diagram, which wires are connected together to the switch, which goes to the switch separately, and which goes to ground? And I guess if you're looking at this and understand it, could you check my work?

Below I've linked a similar post that uses red and green as the series link, which confuses me because typically red and green are hot and ground, respectively. I've also linked the wiring layout of the Fender Deluxe HSS strat. I just don't understand why they would use the wires they did to wire up the series link. Why not black and white?

http://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?p=472518
http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/stratocaster/010-1500_02A_SISD.pdf

My pickups polarity/wind direction is as follows if it's helpful.

DiMarzio Tone Zone S: N, CCW...S, CW
Lace Sensor Hot Gold: N, ?
Seymour Duncan SSL-1: S, CW

I know it's weird that I can figure out this somewhat complex wiring, but don't know which wires I'm supposed to use for the humbucker, but that's my problem haha :oops:

The colour codes for pickup wires vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. Even some Fender humbuckers don't stick to a standard Fender colour scheme.

This lists some of the wiring colours:

Thanks Frank. I also saw this page and it's pretty similar to yours:

http://www.skguitar.com/SKGS/sk/Pickup%20color%20codes.htm

I just don't get why Fender would wire the red and green wires together for their humbucker. According to your link, red and green are ground and hot, respectively. Did they do that to avoid phase issues with the other pickups?

Really the way to approach the problem is to forget about specific colours and to just think about coil start and end wires. For a series connection you need to connect coil 1 end to coil 2 start. For a tap you need to ground coil 2 start. For parallel you join the two starts and ends and ground the ends. The video and diagram should let you figure out how the S1 switch can be wired to produce the combinations you want.

Thanks man, that's a good way to think about it. If you have any free time, do you think you could check my diagram? I'm 98% sure it's correct, I just want another opinion.
