Ok so I have 2010 MIM HSS Strat and 2013 American standard. With all the amp settings the same and the guitar setups practically identical and setting the volume and tone knobs to the same settings the MIM is much more softer in volume than the MIA strat. Resulting in having to turn the volume pot all the way to get them even close to the same level.
Is this a result of the pup differences? or the electronics? Or both?
I've been seriously considering upgrading the MIM one but not quite sure what exactly I want to put into it.
Any thoughts and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Both stats are set up identical the pups are the same height on both guitars.

I would think they are different pickups, some are hotter than others

yep...unless there is some kind of excessive resistance in the pots, it has to be the pickups and different ones have different output levels.. So just turn the volume up on the amp when using the guitar with lower output if it is an issue. Kind of like when I was getting a stabbing pain in my eye whenever I was drinking coffee, the doctor said "take the spoon out of the cup next time"...low and behold....problem cured.

You might want to experiment with the pickup height before any major mods. The sweet spot isn't necessarily the same for different pups.
You probably won't get the exact 'same volume on same pot positions' out of both guitars - but don't worry, the use of volume control is a big part in Strat playing. Dime the amp, adjust the guitar vol.

Anyway, my 2013 AmStndrd had Custom Shop pickups and has noticeably less output than my other Strats and Strat-style guitars, but in a VERY sweet way (it sounds like a Hendrix recording, minus his skill and hands). So, I just matched it with my blazing hot Blackstar amp and the others get played through the Orange or the Laney. Now it's ALL good.
