So after much hard searching, I was able to find a very nice '70s era Strat with rosewood finger board. I own four '70s era Strats, but this was one of the ones I had been trying to track down.

Most everything is original. The pickguard, 1 tone knob, a tone pot and the nut have been replaced.

The fiish is pretty good for its age and the frets are near the end of their life. The pickup are very interesting. They are some most "Strat sounding" gray bottoms I've heard in a while. The neck pup is dated at '74 and the middle and neck pup are dated '75. Here are some pictures.

That one is a beauty. Not quite the 71 you were talking about in another post but for a 70s era 74-75 is the last of the real classics IMO. I am not sure what else changed in 76 up but once they took the serial number stamping off the neck plate and put it on the headstock in 76 it seemed like the end of an era. Granted even a 76,77,78,79 still are going up they will never be quite as desirable as a pre 76.

They first marked them "Made in USA" in 1976. And went to black plastic. (I never dug that.)

I bought my first Strat in 1976 (one made in late 1975).

I also own a blonde '76 (very early '76 before the neckplate serial number), with maple neck fingerboard, black pickguard/white pickup covers, I really love too.

Of all my '70s era Strats, only the '79s neck moved around in the neck pocket. The rest are very solid tight fits. I was able to fix the neck movement by placing a business card in the bottom of the pocket. No more movement.

My blonde '76 Strat has the black pickguard with white pickup covers. I love the way it looks. It reminds of an old Telecaster from the '50s.

When I bought my '75, there were a bunch of newer ones available in all manners of plastic combos...tradition white on white, all black, and some with white PG and black trim, and some the other way around. At that time, all still had neckplate serial numbers...

I was tempted to go for one of the newer models...they looked so different from all the others. I did worry if it would just be another mid-70s fashion mistake...there were so many at the time...

I went natural and all while just because I fell for the look of the wood on this one. I feel fortunate that the tones are lovely (grey bottom pickups), and it's built like a battleship...almost as heavy, too.

Cheers.

Why don't you just post the pics instead of merely the links, Paris......?

Thanks for doing that for me. Sadly, I have never had any luck trying to post pictures. I'll click the "Img" buttom and then place the address, but nothing ever comes up.  fail!

Again, thanks for posting the pictures. I am going try and post the rest of my '70s Strat if I am able.

No problem, Sarge.

When you click on the "IMG" link for a specific pic, you must wait a few seconds until the box containing the addy code becomes highlighted in yellow and "COPIED" appears within the box. At that time, the addy is imbedded on your computer's clipboard and you can then paste it here within a post.

Do the pickups have staggered polepieces?

I always got a kick out of that Strat neck flaws can be "remedied" which things such as matchbook covers and business cards. The several 70s Strats I have owned were all pre 75 and all the necks moved. That stopped bothering me once someone showed me I could knock them back in line with a simple open palm to the opposing side of the neck. One of the best sounding strats I ever owned or played was a beautiful early 70s hardtail, natural finish ash maple neck. Not sure if it was that combination or one of those factors being primary but lord as my witness I could play any chord on that guitar and it was so balanced and full...my quest is to find another like that. I sold that one when I was like 13 years old not having a clue I would actually be a pro in the business one day and if I could go back in time would slap myself in the neck with a garden hose.
