Hi all,

Just bought a NOS 2012 Fender American Deluxe HSS Strat. Very happy with it so far, but was surprised to learn that even with the S-1 switch OFF, the 2nd position gives me both coils of the humbucker, with the middle pickup in parallel. Since the humbucker is so much hotter than the N3 single coils, it ends up sounding more like a weird humbucker than the traditional 2nd position quack.

Is there anyone out there who could tell me a way to get the following:

S-1 OFF:

1. Bridge humbucker
2. Bridge (inner coil) and middle in parallel
3. Middle
4. Middle and neck in parallel
5. Neck

S-1 ON:

1. Bridge and Middle in series
2. Bridge and middle in series w/ cap on bridge
3. Bridge and middle in parallel, neck in series
4. Neck and middle in series w/ cap on neck
5. Neck and middle in series

This should be exactly the same as stock 2012 wiring with the exception of the non-S-1 2nd position.

I've looked around the forum, but with the plethora of different S-1 wiring schemes used by Fender recently, I thought it might be safer just to ask.

Thanks in advance!

I am having similar quandary about various S1 wiring setups. I have a HSS Fender Deluxe Lone Star with an S1 and it merely turns off the inside coil if I am not mistaken(I like it). On those with SSS I really ??? don't quite get it. I read some on it and looked at some schematics on them, series/parallel, etc.(OK!?!); not too much understanding so far. I will continue to study the subject though.
Personally I like a rear 'bucker with the coil tap option. Wonder if a front with same would be the ultimate Strat/SG sound! YEP!!! End goal for me! 2 S1's should do it easily- Fender are you listening? A brand new model!! HSH Strat/SG Deluxe.

Anyone? I hope this isn't an overly dumb question.

Hmm. Okay, so I've been looking around a little bit more, but still can't find an answer that I feel comfortable with. My sense is that the "Passing Lane" switch put the kibosh on the traditional "split the humbucker in position 2" sound that I'm looking for.

http://support.fender.com/service_diagrams/stratocaster/011-9100A_SISD.pdf

This is the wiring diagram for the 2010-Present Strat Deluxe HSS, as far as I can tell. If I'm reading this correctly, this is showing the humbucker pretty much permanently wired in series (black and white joined together) in order to feed a single output to the Passing Lane switch. It stands that if you were to treat the humbucker as two separate coils (usually wired in series, but occasionally split for 2nd position), then the Passing Lane functionality falls apart. Am I right?

My only thought would be to install a push-pull tone pot before the Passing Lane, where I could then send either one or both coils to the Passing Lane. This wouldn't be as quick as simply throwing the pickup selector, but it seems like the only way (at least that my meager schematic skills suggest) to get everything to play together.

I know there are some really bright people on this board who could tell me if I'm totally off-base! Thanks in advance.

The passing lane switch, when pushed in, bypasses the volume and tone controls and puts the humbucker directly to the output jack. When the passing lane switch is not pushed in, it is out of the circuit and does nothing.

The diagram that you posted, incorrectly labels the switch positions, showing the actual position 2 as position 4. You are correct in that, according to the diagram, position 2 is the humbucker and the middle pup together with no splitting of the humbucker.

An easy solution would be to remove the wiring from the passing lane switch, and wire the switch to the humbucker, across one coil of the humbucker, so that when the switch is pushed in, one of the coils in the humbucker is shorted. This would allow splitting the humbucker in position 1 as well as position 2. Of course there would be no passing lane function, which is my favorite setting on my Deluxe.

Actually, on second thought, your idea of a push-pull pot would be even simpler. Wire one contact of the push-pull pot to short one coil of the humbucker. Wire the contact from the black and white wires to the other wire of the coil that you want disabled, inner or outer.

Any chance anybody has a pretty picture putting this on paper? I remember doing a few coil tap projects back in my high school days, but that was a long time ago, and those guitars were not nearly as valuable, nor was the 'stock' wiring harness nearly as involved as the S-1/Passing Lane. As you can imagine, I'm a touch nervous about guessing.

Thanks!

Edit: I'd like to end up using only the inner coil of the bridge, like a standard Strat split.

Leave all of the current wiring as-is. Connect the black and white wires from the hum-bucker to one side of the added push-pull switch, add a short piece of wire from the other side of the push-pull switch and connect that wire to the green wire at the existing push-push passing lane switch. This will allow disabling the outer coil on the hum-bucker in positions 1 and 2, including when using the passing lane switch.

So, just to be absolutely sure, I'd want to wire things thusly?

Do I need to solder a line from the "switch" casing to the "pot" casing? (As shown in my awesome MSPaint diagram.)

And by doing this, which coil would I short? Since I'm connecting it to the positive send (at the Fast Lane switch), wouldn't I be shorting the positive connection? If I wanted to kill the outer coil, nearest the bridge, wouldn't I want to connect to a ground point?

Like I said, I'm rusty on my schematics/electronics, so thanks for bearing with me.

You've got it. This will short the outer coil, as you wanted to use the inner. A ground wire from switch to pot is probably not necessary. Yes, the green wire is one end of the outer coil, the black and white wires are the other end of the outer coil and one end of the inner coil.
