Does this pickguard http://www.fender.com/guitar-bass-parts ... pickguard/ come with shielding, or does it have to be added?

I just ordered a "vintage" Fender pickguard (will be sending back) that did not have any shielding.

If it doesn't have shielding, what it the recommended approach to add it? Are there pre-cut templates, etc?

It should come with some foil on the back. If you don't create aFaraday cage, it won't work anyway.

If you are not familiar with this, I'll give you some insite. If you are familiar with this, then go, "Oh, yah! That's a good idea."

I did with a noisy '76 Strat I own and it worked really well. Here's what I did:

1 roll of foil tape (found at any Home Depot or Loews)
1 exacto knife

There are pleanty of videos of how to do this online. The way I did mine required no soldering. I used copper foil, which did alter the tone a little bit, but for the to my ear. The sound became a little more compressed to my hearing.

I know this one is aluminum but that is exactly what Fender used on the actual vintage Strats. If you want to modify a little as the last poster said to shield the entire guitar superior to the factory then go for copper and do some online research for the proper way to do this and also rewire to eliminate potential ground loops. If you are not concerned but just want to keep it like original, just order something like what I left in the link and call it a day.

Thanks for the answers. What I'm doing is replacing a parchment 1 ply pickguard on my Eric Johnson Strat with an American Deluxe 3 ply mint/black/mint pickguard. Turns out the current original has no shielding on it (I just looked) and so I'm not gonna worry about it.

Before swapping the pickguards make sure the body is pre-drilled to accommodate the 3-ply 11-hole aged mint guard. Otherwise you must drill yourself the necessary holes in order the 11-hole mint scratchplate to fit properly.

Yep, some drilling for a few of the holes is required. I have all the parts now, will post photos of before and after when I get around to doing the mod.

Yes! Aged White, like most put with the mint green pickguard. Photos soon, I will start a new thread when I have them to share.

Apart a few exceptions the EJ models do not come with a backplate.

Did you also plan putting one?

No, if I ever sell it, I want it to be like it was. Any pickguard will cover my extra holes, but if someone prefers the backplate off like EJ intended, I don't want them looking at holes, since none are there now. And, it doesn't bother me, only I see the back anyway. :D

I do have one as part of Fender's Accessory pack if I ever change my mind....

Recently I had the chance to see the custom shop versions built by Chris W. Fleming.

Unlike the regular production runs Masterbuilt EJ Customs sported a backplate.

IMHO Fender must change the spec sheet. EJ uses Super-V tremolo systems on most of his guitars.

Every "Fender" 11 hole pick gaurd that I have ever bought has sheilding on the back. A couple of " non-fender" 11 hole pickgaurds that were made for Strats did NOT have shielding. This is the back of a Fender 11 hole pickgaurd with MIA Standard pickups and wiring. MIA Pickups are Not "Fat 50's" but American Standard Pickups.

One thing to consider is that EJ's signature model is based on a '57 Strat - it's not routed for an eleven screw pickguard.
Another is that the earlier Strats had an aluminium plate for shielding the controls only - the larger shield plate didn't appear until '59.

You can buy shielding tape from Stu Mac and install it on any pickgaurd. Here are some pics of a couple of G&L Legacys I had. I sheilded the guitar bodies and pickgaurds.
