Hello BSS,

The word envy comes to mind,
those are two fine axes.

I'd like a shot at an fmt for that ebony
fretboard. Maybe one day.

Best of luck with your guitars.

Cheers.

My Tele is a American Standard Vintage White and I have been very pleased with it. Thinking of getting a Bill Lawrence Swampkaster T but no one local sells them so I have not been able to see in person.

I play a Highway One every day, and I've played American Standards, and American Deluxes. I'm not a professional, and skill level is just intermediate, but I play a lot and listen to tone. Here's one guitar player's opinion.

American Deluxe - excellent choice, especially the HSS version imho, with some of Fender's top pickup technology, S1 switch, roller nut, locking tuners, Fender's two-point tremolo "improvement," contoured heel - the works. Thick paint on that one. It'll last forever, but with all that paint the guitar slightly lacks resonance compared to the thin nitrocellulose on Custom Shop models. It's a trade-off. SCN noiseless pickups in the neck and middle may need to be replaced if you want a vintage single-coil Alnico tone, but you may like the SCN tone. It lacks complexity but has it's own cool vibe when the amp is driving with a lot of gain. I auditioned these a lot and basically liked them but the SCNs sounded "dead" compared to the vintage pickups that were what I want.

American Standard - Fender's mainline American guitar with the Delta tone Alnico V production single-coil pickups, two point tremolo, staggered tuners, bone nut, hand-rolled neck, brass in the trem plate for sustain, bent stainless steel saddles that never wear out. Also plenty of paint on it for durability and sheen. These definitely don't dissapoint. Because I'm partial to classic-sounding Alnico V pickups that imho made Fender great, I prefer the stock tone to the AmDx, while recognizing the better features of the AmDx.

Highway One - Fender's least expensive American guitar, featuring mexican-made pickups (also found on the HSS American Standard because the TX Mex pickups are made in Mexico somebody from Fender posted here) that have hot Alnico III magnets and are good for a fat blues tone more than classic vintage Fender cleans or SRV tone, large headstock rumored to aid sustain, steel block into the body at the bridge for sustain, vintage tremolo with six screws that's probably better for vibrato in rock and blues and dips in surf than for Vai-like whammy abuse and probably want a Floyd Rose for that anyway. I found mine priced on sale for the same as a made-in-Mexico standard Stratocaster.

So since I have the Highway One, what's my experience? My trem floats about only 1/16th above the body and I've got 5 springs for rock-solid pitch stability, but still use the trem for vibrato. I upgraded the pickups in the Highway One to Custom Shop Texas Specials. I'm not kidding - with the tone knobs at 3, the guitar in neck and neck-mid switch positions, the Blues Junior's volume cranked to 11 1/2 and master turned down to around 2 with the eqs at 7 across, it sounds like SRV. It's got that wicked hollow glass sound you can hear in his great solos. I hear it everyday when I play my blues. With the upgraded pickups, my Highway One is way better in tone than any Dx or Standard I've played, and still cost way less. The tuners are tremendous - this guitar never goes out of tune, and again that's playing blues with limited vibrato from the whammy because generally I do a left-hand vibrato. I do not play radical whammy tunes, because it's not my style. I prefer the vintage bridge for appearance and use nickel steel strings that should avoid any burrs in the chrome. Basically the differences between the American Standard and the Highway One, aside from the pickups, don't affect me at all. If I wanted to change the bridge saddles or the tuners, it's easy. The paintjob is like a Custom Shop and it works. My Highway One is light and resonant and just a very musical and fun instrument.

That American Deluxe FMT HSS is on my personal wish list. I would live with the SCNs for a while and if needed after getting used to them, swap them out. Those are some very sweet guitars you're getting.

I have to say, I'm not impressed at all with the Highway One series.

My MIM Deluxe Players Strat felt and sounded better to me than the Highway One, and was $150 less.
