american standard. Cause it's simply better. It has better bridge, better pickups, better tuners, everything is better. plus U get a great case with it.

the highway one by far upgrade 2006 to present
better tone/playability/feel the highway one does
everthing from vintage to modern and everything in between.
the sustain is also better. its a better all around strat period.
the highway ones have the fender ping tuners. i have strats with
both pings and vintage tuners and the pings are better. why?
simple faster tuneing and they stay in tune a lot better than
the vintage tuners.

Most people would though. They wouldn't be selling very many American Standards if they weren't a higher quality guitar then the Highway One. Who'd want to shell out the extra $400? Not that you're wrong to have your preferences. The American Standard is one of the best selling guitars in the world for a reason.

The bridge on the american standard is better in my opinion. Look closely at the bridge above and compare it to the bridge below. It is vintage style under your resting hand like the one below yet it is a two pole bridge (Better for Modern style wammy playing).

instead of six screws going directly into the wood.

If you want to dive bomb the wammy bar on that highway 1 it can be risky. I have heard stories of people cracking the wood from wanking on a vintage wammy too hard.
If you can, u should consider just stepping up to the American Deluxe like I did!
I find it stays in tune when using the wammy much better with the locking tuners

AND LSR roller nut at the headstock.
Image

Coupled with the recess in the heel (wood where the neck meets the body) in your hand & I was in love!

The Highway is better because it is a better value. There is a difference in the tone however with the money you save on the Highway 1 you can put that towards buying a better amp. I think it's pretty much unanimous that one can take halfway decent guitar and make it sound up to par if it is played through a good/great amp. The only thing that is really left to decide is what feels good in your hands. Sometimes one guitar simply "feels" better than another guitar. For someone the american standard might feel better than the highway 1.

However for me the difference in playability between the two is negligable. I own both generations of highway ones and a brand new american standard and to me they all feel great. However I have changed the pickups on my older highway one but the old stock pickups sounded fine. Unless you're an absolute stickler for vintage tone any guitar will be find.

I prefer the American Standard. I had a 1997 and I have a 2008, the lower line models - as good as they are - don't quite compare to a good old American Standard.

Hi, I had a budget that said the American Standard was perfect for me. After playing many at the guitar shop I was at, I did not find one that was any where comparable in tone capabilities as the 07 Highway one SSS they also had, and I fell in love with the highway one. It is extremely light, can take the wear and tear, and will probably be with me until the day that I die. I could not justify getting rid of it for the money I put in it and the quality of the build and great tone.

I picked up my Highway 1 new for 500$, and took the extra money, threw it towards some new locking tuners, which was my only complaint for the guitar. I especially like the 70s style headstock as well as the vintage style bridge.

My next upgrade however will probably be a new locking tremolo/bridge system if it wasn't for the fact that that will cost me approximately 350$ for the deluxe one. Hell, with that, I could have still upgraded the highway one above "American Standard" standards, and still have a badass strat.

Hi Sixpakmopar,

I have to agree with bss here. The American Deluxe is the sweetest guitar I've ever handled. When I first set out to buy my new guitar this year I had my heart set on a Strat but I didn't know which one. Except for the Deluxe Players Stratocaster I wasn't all that impressed with MIM imports. Even compared to the Highway-1 the Dlx Players was a little rougher, most notibly in the fretwork. I finally decided on the American Standard in Olympic white with a maple fretboard. Then by chance I caught sight of the American Deluxe Stratocaster in Vintage white with maple fretboard and a pearloid, w,b,w pickguard. On the first strum... without even plugging it in, she was solid. The trem on this guitar holds it's tuning as well as any Floyd Rose or similar trems but much more simple. The S-1 switching is pretty awesome. I found my Mary.

It really depends A LOT on your price range and what you're trying to accomplish with your playing. If you have the money, I'd say the Am. Std. is a great guitar, but you really have to try both. If the guitar is just for jamming around and you don't intend on doing any shows, a Hwy. 1 may be a better choice simply because it doesn't need to have all the features the Am. Std. has. But trying as many guitars in your price range is my recommendation. You may find something else (maybe not even a fender  ) that would be much better suited to your playing style, and possibly cheaper.

The American Standard has more precision hardware on it. It's arguably the flagship guitar for Fender.

I'm sure anyone who works at Fender will probably tell you that the American Standard is a better guitar.

But you know something? Who cares? I like my HWY 1. It's built like a sherman tank. It sounds good.

What else matters?
