One problem is their are ussally close to one thousand Stratocasters for sale on Ebay it's population is immense among guitars players. Also lots of vintage guitars in shops where you can play first and all will work you a deal.

I agree that I prefer to play an instrument first before I buy, but I have found that dealer prices are a little higher than book value. They will lower the price if the guitar has been moneyed with or has been refinished.
