So gents, the day had come. I was going to the music store to get my MiM Strat that I ordered more than a week ago. I get to the shop and the box had not been opened yet. Rob, the guy who works at the shop and a really cool guy, asks me "You wanna open it?" I jump on the opportunity.
I cut the tape off very carefully pull out the cardboard top and pull out the guitar. Again, I carefully unwrap it. I look at the front and its gorgeous. Rob's coworker gives me a tuner and I tune it up. Glorious feeling being able to do that with a new guitar the first time. I then notice that a shard of plastic is jutting out from the side of the pick guard. Rob gets a pair of cutters and chops off the plastic. All's fine. The sale is finalized, and then I flip the guitar around and there on the back is a quarter sized gash through the lacquer, paint and a good chunk of the wood. My heart sinks. I show Rob and he apologizes. He assures me that Fender will send a new one. I knew that but I still wanted to take that puppy home. I've been told that Fender will probably send it next day. I hope thats true. Also, the Mustang II I got was scratched down the side. That didn't bother me, and it didn't come with the manual. Also, didn't bother me as its downloadable online. So now you guys know my dilemma. Anyone want to console me? lol

All I can say to that is.... S_ _T happens and Fender as well as the dealer is going to make good on it. What I would be curious to know however was this a QC/inspection issue before or after it was packed or somehow done in shipping? I would imagine the box would have shown damage if it was done in shipping and if it was done at the factory who is packing guitars with damage like that?

Even leaving out the manual is pretty bad as after all these years and years Fender has been doing this you would think they had a check list before anything is shipped out such as is everything in the box and is there damages.

Well, I don't think the box was damaged, and it just slipped by inspection. The manual missing was a product of the music store (I think I got the display) but it works perfectly and I love the way the amp sounds even with my current crappy guitar. Now, I just gotta wait for the new Strat and get rolling hopefully it won't be too long!

Ah okay yes...it you got a display model then it was most certainly misplaced by the store. I remember when I used to work in retail I would try to save everything from the demos so when it came time to sell it we had all the manuals and do-dads etc..but sometimes inventory would just do a "sweep" and throw everything out. Pissed me off to no end.

I know you must be annoyed that you were all set to bring that ax home and enjoy it but it is worth that wait to have one without damage like that. I also wonder if it is possible that was a demo as well transhipped from another store and boxed as new. I can see a very small paint blem getting by inspection at the factory but a quarter sized gash to the wood like that seems unusual. But then again who is to know for sure how they work inspection at the Mexican plant. They used to say never buy a car that was made on a Monday as the assemblers might be hungover lol....but then again on a Friday they might be in a rush to make quotas and get the heck out and start drinking.

It's always terrible when you know everything is gonna be fine, like I know it will be with this guitar and with the amp as well, but you have to wait on it. But Fender is usually quick with shipping, and since the first guitar was damaged I'd imagine they'll expedite shipping on the new one. Here's hoping everything will make it alright this time!

This reminds of the moment I opened the box to my brand new '01 Eric Clapton Strat. I opened the box, looked over the guitar and noticed something wrong. The high "E" string was almost of the side of the neck. I was very concerned, but with some help from my friend and phillip head screwdriver, we realigned the neck and all was well.

That would have freaked me out. Especially with a Clapton Strat!

If you are used to 70's 3 bolt necks typically you have seen this a few times. On the 3 bolt necks however the bottom bolt is more or less a "pivot point" where the adjustment is a simple whack on the neck with the palm of your hand to put it all back in line. The first time this happened when the person showed me that I thought he was crazy..but in time realized it is what you have to do from time to time with those. I would imagine on a 4 bolt neck the issue is not as common but there is play so having to adjust that the proper way by loosening the bolts first is not a big deal...of course if you are not familiar with that issue it can freak you out when taking a new expensive guitar out of the box.
