Not to hijack this thread and I know we have been down this road about quilt top (not for some who think it garish) but man I like that strat.
I don't have one with an ebony board.
Maybe I gotta starts shopping. :D

It is a personal taste thing. I for one dislike quilt tops.

Yep you would not be alone on that!
Kinda reminds me of the Vorlons in Babylon 5 but as I said I like to see the wood and prefer this to painted.
Each to their own of course. :D

It is not really "the wood" though...just a veneer glued to "the wood". However as much as I do not prefer the quilted top...I have to admit they look classy and do understand why some find them desirable.

I think they are pretty, but flame and quilt tops just look out of place on Strats to me. Just my opinion ... they are nice looking, though.

Thanks for pointing that out but I was well aware of the fact it is a wooden veneer.
I don't think the vorlons are real though.

lol I see what you did there.

I guess I assumed when you said you liked to see the wood and not paint you could just get a non veneered strat with a transparent finish. I mean there would not be much reason for Fender to use a quilted top and then paint over it. I am not sure of the reason I dislike them but maybe it reminds me too much of a piece of antique furniture...I just can't put my finger on it because they are beautiful and I should like them. Maybe that is it....too beautiful for a strat?

It always reminds me of the cheesy faux burled walnut that GM used to trim out the dashboard of a '77 Buick Regal or Pontiac Gran Prix.

Ah so all along I could not figure out what I disliked about them and it was simply because it reminds me of a late 70's buick dash !

But seriously I think it might be just because in the back of my head I know it is a veneer and to me that does not belong on a Strat but a cheapo copy or a PRS. Granted I know Gibson does this on the Les Pauls which is a highly respected guitar and pretty much put sunburst on the map....when you consider that in the early 60s they made the SG and called it a Les Paul because even back then thought it looked too "old fashioned"....but when Les told Gibson he will have none of that, we got both...which is a good thing bottom line because different strokes for different folks. Choice is good.

The top on a Les Paul is not a veneer -- it's carved maple.

Yep if we had a poll I am sure less would like the quilt or flame than the normal grain or paint.
I am the first to admit they are TOTT.

I've got an FSR, which is Factory Special Run guitar, made to certain specs by a dealer. Mine is the Gilmour look alike, with the shortened bar and the classic pickups.

A Special edition guitar is one that usually has some different finishes or something like that. I've got a friend who has the black paisley strat and he has the special edition logo.
