I love the color on that sonic blue double neck :o
Have a MIM strat with a rosewood fretboard and the same color. Best guitar I ever played, picked it over a new American strat.

I have built a number of guitars over the years and have my version of answer to the original question: is it hard to build a strat from parts?
No, not really - if you buy quality parts and have the right tools. And some experience of wood working.
The word Quality in this case primarly implies Fender licensed body and neck (Warmoth, WDMusic, Mighty Mite etc). But, mind you, there are way cheaper japanese parts of excellent quality (like Hosokawa, Hosco).
Tools - if you buy readymade parts you'll need a good drilling machine, preferably a pillar drill (don't know if that's the right english word.. but you get it), a good screwdriver with many bits and... well , the usual hand tools. You don't need that much.

If you want to fabricate your own body (now that's more fun) you'll need a router, a good electric jig saw, a Dremel, a belt sander, a finishing sander and all kinds of hand tools. But maybe you should build from parts first.
I attach some pictures of my latest project (finished last weekend, actually). Home made body (mahogany, quilted maple top), Hosokawa neck, one Tonerider and two Fender pickups. And shaped as a Stratocaster, of course.

The stripes on the top is inlaid mahogany.

Hi swenglish,

I googled and yahoo'd hosokawa but couldn't find anything relating to guitars, bodies or necks. Could you please post for us your link to hosokawa?

My mistake. Hosokawa and Hosco is the same company. It used to be Hosokawa but they changed name.
www.hosco.co.jp

I can't find any distributor in the US, though, only in UK, Germany and Sweden. Business opportunity, someone? They make really good parts.

Mmmm-mmm! Unique, very tasty, and by the looks of it, well worth the money. Nice one!

Thanks :D glad you guys like her! It feels pretty cool to play something you built on your own. She's so heavy though, almost 10 pounds

I built a strat from parts and the hardest part had to be getting the neck mounting holes drilled right. It is easily my favorite guitar right now.

Warmoth necks come pre-drilled so you don't have to mess with that

Ooo-er, that's iffy. You'd better hope those holes on the neck match the ones on the body - not always the case, especially if they came from different makers. Always better to ask for an undrilled neck heel. It is very easy to do yourself, and so get the snuggest possible fit.

Cheers - C

Now, that's a nice post, Nikininja. Thank you. I will make you a very reasonable offer in a personal message.
