Is that a Kramer?

3 humbuckers aren't for me. Rock on.

I think so. I found on a google search that Kramer makes a Sambora signature like that with the 3 hums. But they are asking like 300-400 bucks tops for them so I imagine they are china junk.

Yeah, Kramer put out a Richie Sambora signature in 1986, essentially a Pacer Imperial with three Seymour Duncan humbuckers, gold hardware, pointy drooped headstock and a 22-fret maple fretboard with graduated MOP star fingerboard inlays.

This model was offered in a variety of finishes and only a small batch were sold with an ebony fingerboard, small star inlays, ivoroid binding, black painted headstocks and flamed maple tops. Some custom one-offs sported a rosewood fingerboard.

Kramer did also a couple of custom double-neck variants for Richie himself, with the upper side boasting an HS pickup configuration and a hardtail bridge.

Later, Gibson reissued the Sambora signature as the Jersey Star - which is actually a bit different than the 1980s originals.

I remember playing a Gibson Les Paul Ace Frehley model ... and was shocked on how it was almost impossible to play with that middle humbucker taking the room I needed to actually play it.

Yes, I had stated earlier in the post that some people have that problem with them. For some reason it did not get in my way at all....or I guess Framptons, John 5, Ace Frehley, Sambora and dozens of others that used HHH guitars. With my particular technique of playing I move my picking/strumming position all over depending on the attack and tone I want and often are playing over the neck or bridge pup anyhow which may be why having another pup in the middle is a non issue to me as far as playability.

The guitar in question is an Ace Frehley "Budokan" Les Paul Custom - a faithful recreation of the modified cherry sunburst axe the legendary spaceman played during an historic KISS performance at Nippon Budokan in 1977. In total only 300 examples will be made so far - 50 hand-aged guitars signed by the artist, with a further 100 hand-aged guitars, and 150 guitars treated in Gibson Custom’s VOS process.

The Budokan LP Custom differs from the stock production Frehley Les Pauls for the addition of pearloid rectangular blocks in place of his trademark "lightning bolt" inlays and an aged cream pickguard.

No one was "questioning" that Les Paul. 8)

I'm talking about a specific model, nothing else.

Not really a "question" but a description.

Never can have enough guitar facts I reckon

But the topic now is the issue of playing having that huge middle HB. What I am going to do on my next HHH build is not use the trim rings as on the Les and the last one I built. That should take away some pick interference granted if someones style causes them to really "dig" in that area I think that they are of course not going to prefer it unless it was totally flush.

For the next HHH build I suggest a different approach: either a trio of humbucking Lace Sensor Duallies in different flavors or three metal-covered PAF humbuckers (without the bezels) for a true Les Paul Custom vibe.

Choose the configuration which is best suited to your taste.

Well so far I am pretty dead set on using chrome covers....however what will best suit my tastes is what I can get the best deal on. I do have 2 gibson PAFs that if I don't use for something else might look for a 3rd one and put those to use. However they lack covers so I need to order those and solder them on..no biggie.

Actually I take that back...they are not actually PAFs but 490s..which I think are pretty close in spec and have good reviews overall. I would have liked to use the Fender tele deluxe pups because I dig the look but having trouble finding a good deal on them.

Image

They seem to average on ebay to be 70 to 90 bucks each with shipping. I would like to try to keep the budget for the pups under $150 for all 3.

The Wide Range humbuckers Fender actually produces sound different than their 70's ancestors.
Original Wide Ranges were made from CuNiFe.

If you're looking for an authentic CuNiFe Wide Range humbucker then you're out of luck as Fender no longer makes them.

The Telenator Wide Ranges are the closest thing you might expect from a genuine Fender CuNiFe humbucker.

Well since budget is a huge concern any rare or vintage pups are out of the question. As long as it is a reputable brand pup and in my price range that is what will be used. I have tone controls and amplifiers to help shape the sound to suit my tastes. I don't expect it to sound like a 69 Les Paul or a 50s strat.

The first issue actually is I need to do a swimming pool route. For some reason I thought the body (a nice sunburst standard from the 90s I believe) already had one from the factory but when I went through my collection of stuff yesterday discovered it has an HSH route from the factory. Time to bust out the router, mask and goggles.

Think I am just going to stick with the Gibson 490s. I got a great deal on the 2 I have now...I figure I can win one on ebay for around 30-40 bucks...another 20-30 for chrome covers and I am below budget and have decent vintage-ish pickups.

Well in your place I would enlarge the middle single coil pickup slot to have all the necessary room needed for a full sized humbucker (HHH rout).

Yet the idea for a bathtub rout is a good solution but in this case you'll lose a large amount of wood required to produce a more complex tone - making the body less resonant.

With an HHH rout you can modify your pickups to the most often seen aftermarket configurations while maintaining more wood than a bathtub rout.

Personally I strongly recommend to keep the body unaltered and stick a single coil-sized "rail" humbucker in the middle position. You'll get all the benefits of an HHH configuration without compromising the value of your guitar.

Technically the pickup configuration is HSH because of the single coil slot but with the rail humbucker in the central position it looks, feels and sounds more like a regular HHH setup with three full-sized humbuckers.

You can also make an HHH configuration using a body routed for three single coils. Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio, Bill Lawrence and Joe Barden offer humbuckers housed in a single coil format.
