ordered my first Strat, a MIM Sunburst to go along with a Mustang II amp. I should get the guitar in about Wednesday. I've heard that MiM's need more setup than their American counterparts. I'm very excited about this purchase. Can anyone give me advice about a good setup? The guys at the shop will pretty much do any adjustments I want. Thanks guys!

Congrats on your first Strat!

Wait until your guitar is delivered before deciding it needs anything. After a couple hours of play you'll know what you like and what you don't like about it. Then start making a list of details requiring attention.

Pretty much this. Get your favoured strings on it and wail away for a while before changing anything. That's how I roll anyway.

Nor mine.

The only guitar I ever bought regardless of brand or country-of-origin that required nothing is the Fender Custom Shop 1960 Closet Classic Strat -- it played perfectly right off of the rack and I haven't touched a thing on it since the day of purchase.

It could depend on the store or how it was set at the factory. I remember years ago we were guitar shopping for a band member at the GC in Hollywood and they kept bringing us out custom shops to try and he just wasn't liking the feel. I pull an affinity Tele off the wall and hand it to him and he loved it...and bought it. Now had those CS guitars been set up right they would have made a 3 or 4 thousand dollar sale vs a 200 dollar sale. Granted he had to put a few more hundred into the Tele (at least that model was an alder body) it just goes to show what a difference a setup can make. There is no way I can believe a CS could not be set up to play like an affinity lol.

The Custom Shops sale themselves because of what they are.

The setup on the affinity has to be excellent in order for it to sale, it's the only thing it has got going for it.

I would rather play a FCS guitar that isn't setup properly than an affinity that is, and as far as purchasing, it would be the Custom Shop or nothing, because I know it can be setup to my preferences and I'll be glad with my decision.

In hindsight I agree. But for my friend in that case even if I knew then what I know now do not think I could have convinced him. Granted I might have requested a tech there set one up for him before he went off and purchased an inferior guitar just because it "felt" better to him when he was willing to spend a few grand anyhow. But here nor there we ended up replacing just about everything on that affinity and even stripped the poly and gave it an aged white nitro job. Last I spoke to him he sold that and plays a PRS now Image

It has been my experience that both MIMs and Squiers both come very well setup from the factory. I should buy some MIAs just so I can compare.

Pretty much. It can be such a subjective thing. Ironically in a blind test these guys who are experienced did a blind test and confused the squire with the custom shop twice but had no problem telling the Mexi Standard from the American Standard. But my friend was able to tell a difference of an affinity and a CS and liked the affinity better....go figure.
