I am thinking about switching out the bridge pickup in my Strat to a Duncan lil Screamin' Demon. Has anyone tried this pickup? Does it have nice clean tone as well as good distorted tone?

As far as alternative rock, I play a lot of Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Sabbath, Metallica, and some Led Zeppelin. I was first thinking about getting a Duncan Hot Rails but I hear it has no real clear tone. It kind of sounds that way from the Duncan sound board on their site.

I'm basically looking for a pickup with a pretty good Fender clean sound to it, but is also pretty hot when using distortion. At least pretty good for the bands I listed. Clean tone is always important to me becaues I do like blues and jazz a lot as well.

I have a Duncan Alnico Pro 2 full sized humbucker in my other Strat and it sounds really nice for everything. I would get another one of those but I want to keep my SSS pickguard.

There a quite a few pickup makers around that do make some decent pickups. I have never been a fan of any of SD's pickups, they just don't sound right to me.

My personal recommendation is to give Becky at www.billlawrence.com a call. Tell her what guitar you have and what tone you are looking for.

I know that there are sellers on the web that have sound bites of thier pickups; but probably not through a duplicate of your rig; that's always been my problem buying pickups....

Sound clips from websites are BS in my book.
I personally have seymour hot stacks on my tele (i know different then a strat) but they sound amazing. The neck is the regular expected nice and warm but the bridge is a hotrail and man does it give! i kick in some gain bingo bango beautiful... :D
Go to your local guitar stores and ask to see if they have any of the pickups you want installed on *any* guitar to give you an idea.
Try a few out.

p!

I agree; those sound bites are not using what the custome uses amps, strings, the whole setup. But I think it's nice that the vendors make the effort and it is a place to START but certainly not the place to stop ie; make your final decision based on what you here on a sound bite

Yea, the sound samples are good for ruling out which pickups you definitely don't want. But it's hard to see if you really like a pickups tone using just your computer speakers and mp3 files.

One trick short of the music store is to put the pickups name into youtube. Then you can hear it being used with different peoples rigs. Thats one nice thing about a Strat, a lot of people have them.

Thanks for helping me out as best you can.

I used a lil screamin demon in a mim I had years back. I really liked it but I didn't use much distortion either. It's so hard to recommed a pup since everyone has their own tastes, amps, pedals, etc...you might try it and think "that cryingstrat has no friggin taste at all, he doesn't know what he's talkin about"

And we'd both be right.

Yeah, throw a Burstbucker Pro in there and be done with it.

Depends on the Burstbuker. (Yeah, I know this is a rib...BUT...)

I'd actually look into what Fender is putting in their American Strats and go from there. At least find out what style of magnet is in your existing strat to get a reference.

But seriously, if your guitar is already cut for a humbucker (the HWY 1's are if I'm not mistaken) just get a pickguard and go for it!

Thanks cryingstrat Strat. Yea I understand about differences in taste. I'm gonna see what I can do about finding a Strat with one installed so I can hear for myself. I'm also gonna look up reviews on it.

I don't want a full sized humbucker because I want to be able to put the old pickup back in if I feel like it. I do a lot guitar electronics stuff.

The old one is a vintage noiseless, I believe it has alnico magnets.
