If you buy one a year, after awhile, you will have a lot. And you become a collector by default.

You nailed it. It is a Strat thing and some will never understand. However I do not always buy one a year...some years I might buy 3 or 4..some years I might buy nothing.

Interesting to read how large a collection of one particular model that people have. I think it's cool that some of you build your own custom versions of this iconic instrument. What would you be doing if it not for Leo. I currently have 3 and hopefully able to get a 65 reissue in the future.

I have several other hobbies besides my Fender guitar and amp interests, though they seem to consume the lion's share of my leisure time of late.

That is an interesting question. I guess the same could be asked of Gibson Les Paul fanatics that what would they be doing if not for Les Paul. And we could also ask theoretical physicists what would they be doing without Einstein. So until someone invents a better wheel, all we can do is be thankful to those who invented something that not only gives us pleasure....but on occasion those who enjoy the music these great instruments from Leo and Les have delivered and inspired.

Granted I certainly have a collection of Strats I also have other models and brands as well. I simply favor the Strats as my personal taste finds them sexy, comfortable to play, and very versatile. I guess I could have collected coins as well but to me I find the only purpose for coins is a laundry mat and parking meters. To others they are obsessed with it and probably think it is silly that we collect, value, treasure and derive so much pleasure from a hunk of wood with strings on it. All subjective.

Never enough strats. I would love a 67-71 myself but am piecing together a 73. The price of a 71 is getting astronomical as well as the parts for it....the necks alone cost more then a car lol. As far as my strat count overall I think I am close to a dozen now. The reason I don't have an exact count is I have been buying bodies, necks and parts for a few years now and have not taken inventory of them since my move. Been too busy with the customs and restoring a 69 Gibson SG I got for next to nothing. But the time is soon when the main workshop is ready to lay them all out and start ordering the rest of the stuff needed to complete them all. So many strats, so little time. But just knowing they are there gives me a happy. Granted that would increase 10 fold if I could play them all already :)

Speaking of 71's there is a neck here on ebay now.... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1968-71-FENDER- ... 1c40fcd647 $7,000 plus shipping. Only "18" watchers lol.

A decent '71 Strat is going to cost anywhere from $5K - $14K. It depends on color and condition. I don't care about finish condition or things like pots, switches and the like.

The price is gone up for several reasons. '71 was a stransition year from the 4 bolt to the 3 bolt neck.

'70s era Strats are the last of the vintage Strats that anyone can get for a realisitic price without selling his or her soul. Why '67 - '71: Jimi Hendrix.

Part of it is they were the years that used the large headstock before the bullet truss rod and since that was mainly what Hendrix played that alone makes them more desirable. With vintage guitars it seems there are "periods" or "transitions" that create the value to collectors and hence increase the value for the guitars and parts. The older it seems the more valuable. For example a 74 Strat is worth more then a 79 and there are only very subtle differences as far as the look and sound. Just as the mid-early 60s pre CBS strats are worth more then the later 60s CBS, the 50s strats are worth more then the 60s ones all else being equal. But that said a guitar is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay. Many times things are listed for sale at a much higher price then it can actually fetch and the seller is hoping for a sucker, or someone who is so desperate for the part they will gladly overpay. The bottom line is these older Strats are increasing in value (granted like anything else has fluctuations depending on the economy etc) and the more original the more it is worth since the fact of the matter is back then no one really considered them collectibles so many were parted out, routed, pickups replaced and the originals tossed, stripped paint or crappy refins, redrilled neck, changed tuners etc etc and all that makes it harder to rebuild an original hence just like old muscle car original parts they do not make anymore the price goes up..and more so if more desirable...supply and demand.

However once in a while you get a seller that does not really know what he/she has, or a seller that is so desperate for cash they will let something go well below market value. That is where I come in as the buyer, or other buyers like myself where we can resell it at a profit or at the very least have a guitar we love and always wanted without paying top dollar.

+1 Agreed!

While agree with you, and I feel that each guitar is unique to itself. Each of my Strats sounds different than others. My EC Strats sounds very different than my '76 Strat, and my '76 Strat sounds different than my '77. Of all my Strats, my 50th Anniversary American Series sounds the most like an old Strat from the 50s. My '79 Strat has some special wiring which allows me to use the neck and bridge pickup at the same time (think Blind Faith era Eric Clapton).

Did they actually make any 1971s with the 3 bolt micro tilt neck? I thought that was done in 72 when they switched to the bullet truss. I don't recall ever seeing a non bullet truss large headstock with a 3 bolt.

I have never seen a three bolt without the bullet truss rod. But knowing Fender, I wouldn't be surprised to see one some day.

I think I have seen a late 1971 with the 3 bolt/bullet combo (there is one on Gbase right now).

I have a lefty with a Jan 71 neck date for the FULL Hendrix treatment.

I always wanted one of those. I know people who play righty and use Fender Hendrix signature models but it is not the same as taking an actual lefty and flipping it...in essence doing exactly what Hendrix did in reverse which would be the closest you can get. Since I don't see an authentic 67-71 lefty or righty in my near future I have thought of building my own lefty tribute to flip using RI parts and do keep my eyes open on eBay for deals so I can do this. The thing is even the large headstock non bullet RI necks are pretty steep in price and not very common..but I keep looking and it is on my build "bucket list". Got to find that one seller that slips up and lists it under valued.

In a related story, I know a girl in a pro band that plays a righty flipped. On the vid comments everyone was saying how cool it was since hendrix did that. However they failed to note that she did not re-string it...she was actually playing it upside down...which is pretty cool in itself but I did point out that she was not actually doing it quite the same as Hendrix.

True that. I wonder if hendrix would have used that exact guitar without the string reversal had it been available to him at the time. I imagine he would have liked easier access to the top of the board granted from what I hear he had really long fingers. The ironic thing for me is I am a lefty...heck I can't even write my name with my right hand. But I play righty guitar since when I started playing I did not even know there was such a thing as a lefty guitar and never even considered flipping a righty.

In some ways it is an advantage since it was very fast and easy for me to learn chording and leads since my good hand is on the fretboard. The downside is I always had issues with my picking and have to cheat to even do any sweeps. I actually learned to use my fingers and am almost as fast with them as a pick but figure I am compensating by having more then one pick. However there are certain things I just can not do correctly without a pick so I find in certain songs I have a pick in my hand for parts of it, and in my mouth for others. Seems to work for me....unless I am getting slowly poisoned from pick residue.

I have two Strats and two SLO's, I now have my eye on a '59 re-issue, after that who knows, but there will be more, as long as I have breath in my body. 8)

Having a understanding wife helps! :D
