My first guitar actually had 24, haha. But then i fell into fender :) and had 21 frets for a bit. Now i have one of both. I really like the 22th for the easy harmonic (i don't need to guess where it is) and an extra set of notes is always good in my book.

As far as playability and sound... i don't see a difference. Unless we're talking about different wood/finish.

p!

Fender has been making longer necks for some models for a long while; not all Fenders have the longer necks.
I don't think you'll hear a difference in sound. You can bend that string to an even HIGHER note though!

I maybe wrong about this, but I think 22-fret necks first regularly appeared when they introduced the American Standard series back in 1986.

Correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK a 22 fret neck compared to a 21 fret neck isn't any longer, the scale length is the same, it just has a slight overhang over the base end of the neck with the last fret on.

Adding a fret at the high end of the scale shouldn't change the tone; adding one at the bottom would change the tone I believe...

yes, there is a major difference
21 fret Strat more easy to play lead
and if you are learning a Hendrix song
22 frets will be difficult to move around
the space is too small for me

That makes no sense.

I was told that the American Strats are 22 frets and the imported Strats are 21 frets. It was suggested that it's Fender 's (and the owner's) way to determine the authenticity of the ax.

Hmm I don't think so. I'm pretty sure some of the reissue strats sport 21 fret necks.

I practice on a 24, going back to a 21 or 22 feels easier....too me!

I have both (and a 24).

21- like mentioned, there is a little more room when you go up high.

22 - it's nice to have that high-D on the fret, and easier to bend up from that D to a high E. You can also play more high leads in the Em or G key. I like more room on the 21, but I'll settle for the 22 since I can play more on it...
