This thing has been in the work for the past 3 years. Why it took so long... lack of funds (back then) and time. Also in all that time it's been thru 3 different stages (3 different completed guitars).

Image

So, here's a little info on it.
There was a new-age/artistic newspaper in circulation for a while here (DOSE, now offered online). What I did was collect every issue for a full year and went thru all of them cutting out the best art pieces. I then transposed them to the body (sanded, prepped and all that jazz). I used wallpaper glue to stick it and a glossy varnish to finish it. You could see it has a 'papier-mâché' guitar.

The guitar itself was given to me by a friend; it was some junky strat knock-off. I remember bringing it to my tech/luthier and he swore that in his 30 years of experience he had never seen such a warped neck (compared it to a baseball bat or something :D ). So the neck was garbage. Actually everything about it was, but it was free and it's a guitar and well I love guitars!

Image

I needed new parts! But I didn't have a good job back then and well money was an issue. So I bought another strat knock-off to strip it and use the parts (at that point the only original parts left were: the pick guard, the neck plate, the back plate and the body).

Surprisingly everything went well and the part swap was successful! But. The neck was already drilled and the holes didn't align well... leaving 3/4 inch hole between the last fret and the neck cavity (not good!). Never the less it worked and rocked out. I even went as far as removing the second tone control (leaving a main tone... always thought 2 were stupid but i won't get into that now) and installed a kill switch (big red button that kills the signal and can create interesting sounds).

Image

So the guitar was now in its second stage... but I wanted a strat... a nice, loud, modern strat (to reflect what that newspaper was about). So after getting funds and doing a lot of research I went ahead and finalized it.

I got a new real fender lic. neck with the skunk stripe.
A set of emg-sa's with a SPC (also called fat tone, this tone knob basically boost the tone to make it sound like dual coils, really cool!) and put a little Hendrix with the gypsy flip bridge pickup (notice how it’s flipped the other way).
A American standard 2-pivot point bridge with brush metal saddles. ( Converting from synchronised 6 holes to two studs was a challenge but it worked... let me know if you need info on that no one seems to be adventurous enough to do it from what i saw).
And new Schaller locking tuners.

Image

I put all these parts together and bingo bango you got yourself a rocking guitar!

This is technically the first guitar I’ve ever built/moded. I started this when I was younger (16) I’m now 19 with a little more experience :D but I’m still learning and I’m still building.

If you like home built guitars check out my secodn built, it's a tele :)

I like it! I'd love to see it close up.

Were you inspired by the "Obey" guitars?

Right you are. I couldn't quickly find a picture of that one.

For your next project, you might try a collage using old metal signs and such (like a couple other Fender Art Strats)! I have old personalized license plates that say "STRATS" that would be perfect as part of such a work of art. They are from Wisconsin, black letters on yellow.

Also, a collage of items from old Johnson Smith's "Fun Catalogs" would be real cool (or something like the Rolling Stone's Exile on Main Street album cover).

Very cool - I'm typically not a fan of people doing strange things to their guitars other than playing them, but it looks like you've done a phenominal job. My hat's off to you.

Looks great!...and even though it's cluttered with various pictures, etc., it's not heave on the eyes.

Here's that license plate I mentioned above.

Image

it might be cool riveted onto a Strat body (like the "Custom Art" guitar that was in the last In-Home Frontline mailer).

Of course, I have two of those plates. This one is mounted on a wooden LP crate.
