Looking for a nut for a custom 10" radius Strat neck. Would anyone recommend a bone nut that is pre-slotted? What's the possibility of running into problem (string fit, slot quality/shape, etc.) with pre-slotted nut, if any? (I use .009-.043 strings.) If there's a chance of any issues I'll look into other nuts. I've never had a locking nut and possibly use that since I may add a Floyd Rose tremolo later on. I'd like to avoid having someone create a bone nut for $75. (ie. Budget is tight.)

There was a discussion you might find interesting to read: Any leads on a nut ...
I quote Graphtech's own ad text for pre-slotted nuts: "almost all of the work is done, all that is needed is final fit for length, height and thickness".
Can't give you a bone nut manufacturer recommendation, I do mine from blanks - but TUSQ is not a bad alternative for bone.
In the link you'll find info on what to do, ©ceri.

Not sure what they mean. The retail pre-slotted nut will need some final finishing? I don't have files to do that. I know that the bottom of slot has to be rounded properly.

I used a pre-slotted Graphtech nut on my last guitar. (Graphtech is basically the same as tusque? They are both permanently lubricated and are solid materials?) I thought the sound/sustain was OK. (I did have noise in the nut occasionally when tuning and when bending trebles (on HWY1 Strat). And it didn't stay in tune well. Maybe it needed more finishing? Maybe slots weren't the right size/shape?)

Noises in the nut and not staying in tune - that usually says nut slots need a little work and/or lube. Usually you don't need to do much, and a few strokes with wet/dry sandpaper is enough - see the "Bluffer's etc." part in ceri's tutorial in the previous link.

Graphtech is the company, TUSQ a product. That "all that is needed" means you have to do some finishing work to make the nut fit your guitar - all Strats are not alike. GT's web pages give very good instructions on what to measure when you order a nut.

But (and I will quote this from myself to a similar question on the Telecaster side), a genuine bone nut is always a bit of a "luxury" item. That means it is made or at least fitted for a particular instrument, and that in turn means you either do it yourself or pay someone else to do it.

Ok. Little more elaboration: "all that is needed" means fitting the nut to the neck and isn't a reference to the string slots (and the string slots will not be a perfect custom fit)?

That's what you can expect - ain't giving no warranty, though.

Me, I'm meticulous with the guitars I work on, so I'd also polish the slot bottoms (like I do with saddles...) but that's another story.
