Well this one is easy by a mile Bonnie Raitt .I mean she had her own signature model and can play slide as well as anyone of either gender. For whatever reason I dont understand why women on a whole cant compete with guys on guitar. I mean there are enough female players out there and probably more now than any other point in time but the percentage of those who can play on a top level is tiny. Since Michael Jacksons death there have been a lot of clips on youtube with Jennifer Batton who to me is probably chops wise the greatest female guitarist ever that woman could hold her own with anyone. There is a great clip of her talking on youtube and she says when she used to play the beat it solo all the lights would go down in the arena and she had to follow MJ around the stage in big heels and could not see and then she goes into being in a studio and Vanhalen was recording next store and he came in to ask her to show him the solo because he really could not remember it and she says talk about being put on the spot.Theres some great clips of her and Beck going blow for blow also.Just a cool woman and killer player

That's probably because girls are usually content to just watch the band. Maybe if they have a guitar they'll learn a few chords and/or easy songs. But I think that the main reason for girls not playing on a highest level is that girls like different kinds of music than boys. Boys like Van Halen/Shredders, boys like Blues, boys like electric guitar music.
Girls like pop, girls like country, girls like singer/songwriter acoustic guitar stuff, girls like cute singers or female singers that are "good". Why do you think Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers are so stinkin' popular? Boys? No.

The bottom line is that boys gravitate towards music in which you have to be a really good guitar player to play, and girls gravitate towards music to simple and easy it makes you brain turn to mush when you hear it. That's the case with most of my friends, but there are some girls I know who do like stuff like blues or metal and I know some guys that listen to pop crap.

After all that I forgot to post what I originally came here to post.
I'll go with Bonnie Raitt too.

Watch any guitar forum and you'll see why "girls" don't play rock guitar... because any woman who hangs out with musicians has to take an incredible amount of harassment. A woman joining a rock band as anything but the "hot lead singer" might as well join the plumber's union for all the respect she gets.

And I agree that Bonnie Raitt is the greatest... perfectly in tune, sweet, smooth, clear slide playing that leaves most slide heroes in the dust. She's also an awesome singer and a real class act.

I agree, Bonnie Raitt is the only female Strat player who immediately comes to mind.

The reason for the relative lack of women rock guitar players must certainly be sociological. Definitely not genetic, since there are plenty of great female classical guitarists!

And not to say ladies can't rock out. Just ask my sister -- she's the drummer in my band!

Joanne Shaw Taylor is a Tele player worth checking out, but on Strat you must check out Laura Chavez.

Carmen Electra (Ok, joking)

Yes, "duh," indeed. AS I said up higher, Mary Kaye didn't play a Strat, she played D'Angelico jazz boxes. She just posed for that picture with the transparent white guitar, but never played it.

HOWEVER, starting in 1988, after the establishment of the Fender Custom Shop, and finding out how popular the photo really was, she signed up and endorsed the Mary Kaye strats. The FCS even did a ltd. run Mary Kaye in '05, called "The Mary Kaye Signature Model" with an original copy of the ad, and a replica of the guitar and how it appears today.

you should read "The Stratocaster Chronicles", pal.

you'll learn new things every time you read it.
