Hi. So, today I received a new Fender American Standard Strat in Olympic White, only to realise that there were specks of red paint splattered beneath the finish, as well as some black specks and a faint red smudge. These are located near the bottom strap button. I was really disappointed as surely something like this should not get past quality control, I know I'm a little fussy but when you're paying over £1000 for a guitar like this you should expect it to be almost flawless! I would feel bad returning guitar after guitar to where I bought it from (I already had one which arrived with a crack in the finish) so they would end up having two of the same b-stock guitars, so I was thinking about contacting Fender directly to see what they would say, though it would be likely that they'd tell me to contact where I bought it from. Any advice of what I should do, and, if you had this problem, would you return the guitar for another? I will post some pictures later on when I can.

Thanks for your help,
Rob

I think it comes down to this - does this particular Strat play better than any other you've played recently? If so, then ignore the paint issues and keep it; those issues just add character to the guitar. If it's just an average Strat - no better and no worse than any other you've tried out - then send it back because this will always bother you.

Your guitar came with a Road Worn starter kit. People pay extra for that.
I would return it and tell the dealer not to try to replace it with another defective guitar.

For that kind of money, the instrument should be flawless.

Take it right back. It will ALWAYS bother you. Every time you pick it up, your eyes will ALWAYS go there.

If you're asking this question, then you already know the answer.

For issues like these, I like to predict if Rob will chime in or not...meanwhile...

This is not the case of discussing if a certain grain characteristic is natural/beautiful/distracting. A painted white guitar needs to be all white and there really isn't a midway point to be discussed.

When you say "received", we expect this was ordered and delivered to you...or a local dealer? Either way, it s not acceptable and a return policy needs to be in place to allow you to reject an instrument that doesn't measure up to standards.

Note to self...be grateful that I have the benefit of several local dealers and can literally pick and choose after a thorough inspection and ample playing time. Be aware that many others have fewer options...expecially overseas.

So, let me get this strait, your strat came with a customer paint job, for free, and your complaining? :o

Yes, by all means i would also take it back, if Fender is going to make the dealer keep it, i would ask to send it to the warranty station and have them deal with it.
They would, most likely send another body for them to swap out.

I agree, thats unacceptable. I dont care how a guitar plays or sounds. If you pay top dollar for a new guitar, it should be flawless. I dont buy a car with a dent on the hood thinking "thats ok, it rides nice and runs good."

I emailed both the dealer and Fender about this. The dealer replied and said they will get in touch with Fender themselves as they don't want a second guitar being returned to them which I can completely understand, especially when the problem lies on Fender's side. So hopefully Fender will deal with this but they are yet to reply. Talk about being an awkward customer!

Why do people pay extra for a MIA guitar over a MIM or MIC?
For their superior quality we are told. If they have quality issues, send them back.

Some of us buy Made In USA because we want to support local workers and economy.

Time to fire your dealer. They should have inspected the guitar and sent it back to Fender with that kind of noticeable finish flaw, not pass it along to their customer. Sure they could say that it shouldn't have passed inspection and have been sent to them - but I suspect Fender has some kind of standard for non-functional finish flaws before they reject a body.

Your dealer shouldn't be hassling you about wanting to return a guitar. Yes, it would be a warranty issue from Fender, but unless you had the guitar for longer than any agreed upon inspection period (I don't think that is the case as it from your original post that you just basically opened the box and noticed this issue) then they should take it back and they should deal with Fender.

I agree with those who are critical of the dealer. They must receive it back. Who cares if they have to take back another flawed guitar. It's their problem & Fenders not yours.

Rory's was pristine when he bought it.
The OP should return the guitar if it's not up to snuff!
