Hey all...

Finally received all the parts to finish the second, and final version of my Jerry Garcia inspired strat. I just got done setting it up and taking if for a lengthy test drive... man oh man! 8)

With all those exposed bobbin tops I'm reminded a little bit of this one ...

OK, I see two jacks, are the pickups split in to left and right channels?

No, one is a stereo out that goes into a junction box so that I can turn my effects loop on/off from the guitar with one of the toggles. There's also a unity gain buffer so that the signal that hits the effects is constant... meaning that if you have an envelope filter set for a certain sweet spot, it doesn't effect that setting/tone if you use the volume knobs... a pretty handy little invention that Jerry guitar tech used in many of his guitars.

well, it's loaded with two Dimarzio Super 2s, and a Dimarzio Super Distortion in the bridge. If one were so inclined (and not playing hippy music) it could probably go to 12 :)

I don't quite understand what the two jacks are for. Try explaining again?

The top input uses a regular cable. The bottom input uses a stereo cable. Both of those cables go into a routing box. That routing box is wired with an effect in, effect out, and one direct to the amp. The lowest of the three toggles on the guitar can bypass the effects loop and go straight into the amp. In my case, I have two independent loops... one with a tuner, reverb, and delay, and one with all the rest of my effects. So, with that toggle I can turn on my overdrives, wah octave, envelope filter, or whatever effect I have on the Line 6 M5. With so many effects, it basically delivers a clean boost to bypass the majority of my effects.

Inside the trem cavity of the guitar is a unity gain buffer which is powered by a 9-volt battery. The volume pot is a 25k pot. The signal sent to the effects loop(s) is constant... so there's no backing off an overdrive to clean it up using the volume knob, it only lowers the volume and whatever effect level stays the same. The benefit of this, and probably one of the reasons Garcia came up with the idea, is that he regularly used an envelope filter. Once you find a sweet spot, you're stuck keeping the guitar at that volume or the envelope filter gets has too little or too much quack. The buffer fixes that by sending it a consistent signal.

Other oddities on this guitar is the knob arrangement. The 5 way works as you'd suspect. The volume knob is also in the regular strat position. The top toggle splits the middle pickup, and the middle knob controls the middle tone. The bottom tone knob controls the tone of both the neck and bridge pickup, and the middle toggle splits both of those.

Th whole system is very dynamic. The volume has a huge usable range with no negative effect on the tone, and the tones also have a very gentle sweep making them usable across the whole range of the potentiometer.

 I fear that this explanation is more confusing than clarifying... I've confused myself  The simplest thing would be to check out the link where I got the schematic. Mike Is an awesome guy... the same guy who builds the buffers. He was a huge help when I was exploring the idea of building this thing... there's a lot of wiring and then I had to build the junction box on top of it all. The cool thing is that I can simply use the guitar through any amp w/o the box so long as I don't mind giving up the on board effects loop. Here are the links to his page. The one I built is a blend of the two wiring schemes and pickup combinations minus any midi electronics. The links for both are found below. I also have a strat with an Alembic blaster I installed... Jerry used a modified version of that in a strat of his but that's another guitar story for another day! :)

So Jam guy have you also joined those two jacks into one loom so that they stay together while moving around stage? Would make sense, as having two separate cables flopping all over the place would be awkward.

I haven't but it's a great Idea... I need to figure out how I'd go about doing it. It honestly isn't much of a problem. Both cables are the same length and come and go from the same side of the junction box so it's easy to keep from getting tangled up if you stay put... and I do, I don't move around too much while I'm playing.

Yeah if you can make it work with two standard in dependant cables then they are easier and quicker to replace when you have a cable break. However finding a 4 or 5 core shielded cable to route all signals into one loom shouldn't be hard to find either, but you would probably have to solder the end jacks on either side for each jack point.

Did Jerry actually play a Strat like that? Or is it wired similarly to one of his guitars? I know that he liked triple-pickup guitars.

No, he never played one like this but he did play a few strats over the years... in 72 he was playing a stock sunburst 50's strat and then later that year (I think...) he began playing "alligator", a 50's strat that was heavily modified. He also used a black strat for some midi/synth stuff in the 90's.

The wiring on the one I just put together is similar to his Doug Irwin built guitars though he switched to using all Super 2s after a while. I like the Super Distortion in the bridge... it's one of my favorite pickups.
