Here is the pitch

:Price is firm. Don't even bother me if you're planning on offering me anything less. Includes a hardshell case. Plays great, and is in excellent shape for a 25 year old guitar. Stamped "made in USA" at the heel of the neck, after looking on the Fender website leads me to believe it was a Made for export model. Pots will need to be cleaned(wd40 or any pot cleaner should do the trick), but still sounds and functions great. The only trade I will consider is for a Telecaster, 2x12 or 4x12 cabs, or a tube head( fender supersonic, Prosonic, Peavey 5150, 5150II, 6505, 6505+, 6534+, JSX, Jcm 900 2500, JCM800 2204, JMP 2204, Soldano Hot Rod 50, anything spawn, train wreck and rumble clones, or partial trade towards a Dr Z Z Wreck).

I told my friend to hold off and I will ask some question to the fender forum

It's exactly the same model Strat that we are discussing in this thread:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=94231

It's just the maple fingerboard version. There's no consensus other than it is a real Fender but not a USA Fender. They are probably MIJ made to specs that fall in-between the MIJ Standards and MIJ Squiers of the day (late 1980s), and stamped "Made in USA" into the wood somewhere down the line because the guitar has no country of origin sticker on it. They were built for export only, mostly to Europe and South America but of course some of them made their way to the USA.

Thanks John C for your quick input so I will tell my pal to pull the trigger if this is the one he wants for the price listed

Yes, and everything else about it says Squier, including the things under the hood which we can't see on this one. Some of the early Squiers and Squier series Strats were very decent guitars (maybe discounting the cheaper electronics). This seems to be one that is jazzed up with a Fender logo, legitimately IMO. I don't buy that Fender stamped the "Made in USA" on the neck though.

Yeah that's my thought and for 500 USD I think he should wait because another will show up at that price maybe without being a quirky fender

Sorry, I missed the price in the CL ad you posted. You're absolutely correct, $500 is too much for one of these. He should be able to wait and find a USA model like a Highway 1 for that price and for not much more he could get an American Standard/American Series.

Yes, it's just about the Squier quality level, but it is a Japanese "I" serial number Fender Strat. The pickguard screw pattern is the same as a Squier, but the truss rod adjustment is at the heel end of the neck, not up at the headstock with a black plastic insert.

That is about the poorest "Made in USA" stamping I've seen so far.

Did the Japanese Fenders have the "Made in Japan" decals at the neck heel at that time? I wasn't following the Japanese product back then. (I did buy a 1995 MIJ Tele in ... Well ... 1995. And then bought a few Japanese Gibsons. All high quality units.)
