Hi, my father bought me what I always thought to be an American strat for my birthday when I was 16 (20 years ago) but I now think it's a fake. My father collects guitars so it does surprise me that he would got caught but perhaps he new and it was cheap!!?? Anyway, it's a lovely guitar to play so never really had any suspicions until the logo chipped which made me think 'hang on a minute'. I then researched the serial number which is 1001219 and it doesn't seem to be genuine.

So I am right in thinking this is a fake and if so what is it? A tarted up squier? Although it's still a nice guitar to play it still feels tainted!

Tunings keys are not Fender IMO .

Bridge is like some '70 Fender , but in '70 Fender Strat have the big head .

Sure it is fake .

I think the OP is trying to pull our legs by displaying photos of different guitars and necks, because in the next photo, the "Made in U.S.A." stamp is missing from the neck.

Besides, this should be posted in the Stratocaster forum, not here.

This is the same guitar. Sorry if i have not posted it in the correct place. The 'made in usa' is on the back of the neck just above where the neck meets the body.

I see you photo you mean, this is just because of the angle means the body is obscuring it from view. Your lack of trust is obviously a concern though!

I am not so sure it is fake. Seems like we have seen a guitar like this before and IIRC it is an US made guitar that was for export. Ring a bell with anyone?

Also OP was it bought from a dealer or from an individual?

Well... not necessarily convinced it's fake... or real Fender...
Tuners could be replacements...
Body looks like Fender... pickguard looks legit... not sure about the neck markings inside the pocket.
Japenese export?... maybe...
Any under the hood shots?...
Do you have any markings on the body end of the neck... a stamp or pencil markings... may be a Re-Issue... Ols School 60's profile headstock.... perhaps a late 50's RI.. maple neck... where's the truss adjust?...

K... scoped the pics again... neck heel truss adjust... perhaps a late 50's export RI...
BUT...pickaurd has 11 screws... ols school would be 8 screws... modifications?...

I have not made any mods but it was not new when a bought it. What pictures of the body would I need to post to determine if it's real? Under the scratch plate? The fender logo coming away from the headstock.. Could that happen on a real fender or is the logo painted into the wood? The logo seems to have come away with the laquor.

The neck and body pen marks seem to match which makes me think they have spent their life together this the guitar was made but then again this of course could have been done to make it look that way afterwards...

Perhaps I need to take this to a expert to have a look?

Look up "I series Stratocaster" that SN begins with an I, not a 1.

They were USA made for export only.

I am in no way a Strat expert, so take it with a grain of salt.

However, the serial number on the picture of the head doesn't seem to be original to me. Notice the different aging of the wood in direct proximity to the serial number and the aging of the wood a bit further away from the serial numbers.
As I said, I am not a Strat expert and my Strat isn't nowhere near as old that I could judge stuff based on mine (and I also don't have it with me so I can't check whether the serial number on it is stuck to it), but to me it looks like the wood aged first at a slower pace in the area of the serial numbers (indicating the serial numbers were on some sort of a sticker, stuck on the head) than the area surrounding it and then started aging at a similar pace than the area surrounding it (indicating the sticker was taken off and the 'new' serial numbers were painted together with the laquor, the rest of the head, including Fender logo, could be done in a similar manner).
If you pay special attention to details, you can see the same sort of different aging of the wood surrounding Stratocaster word (albeit in a lesser degree than around the serial number) and also surrounding Fender word (pay special attention to the lower part of the letter F, the other aren't as apparent).
There is also an area of the head which seemed to have aged differently (again, much more difficult to spot) and has no words in it - check the bottom half of the head under the high E tuning peg.
