Funny ... I thought for sure it was those Burmese Taung Kalat Monastery pickups.

I can have a DNA test done on the tone wax just in case it actually was built by the monks but using Samick parts.

Not even an honorable mention for the Monks!

Buddah laughs.

So does the Dalai Lama...

I can understand your concern but as stated I am waiting for the results of the DNA test...

I wonder how those covers got so discolored?

Do they smell like cigarettes?

That could be the next contest question.

They have no odor whatsoever. And being that I deal a lot with vintage Fenders as well as relics I have never in my life seen pickup covers that discolored. Now unless someone else has owned a guitar with white pickups that have turned that color and explain how it naturally happened we may never know the answer.

What I can add and this may add to the mystery is that despite the discoloration and heavy oxidation on the original screw heads and pole tops...the bottom of the covers and screws do not appear nearly as aged. Maybe the guitar they were originally in was left out in the elements for a few weeks or years? I can confirm that the oxidation on the pole tops and screw heads are the real deal. It is "worn in" oxidation and not just surface or artificially reliced on there.

Walter Trout has one of the most worn '70s Stratocasters I've ever seen. The finish on his guitar has turned that peanut butter color (and has really gone to heck), but the pickup covers are no where near as discolored as those Hondos!

I know. I am thinking maybe it is a combination of what those pups were exposed to combined with whatever material Hondo used to make the covers. Must be some kind of reaction that at least Fender covers do not react to that way. The worst I have seen in the oldest most beat up abused fenders were a slight yellowing of those white covers.

I have a set of those pups and really like them. If you ever decide to install them I think you'll be somewhat surprised. They seem to give somewhat of a "Ventures" type vibe. Also, neck and middle pickups have a very sweet chimey bell like tone. If I had to pick an era that they remind me of, I would say early sixties.
Enjoy.

Thanks that is good to know. As I stated my first "Strat" was a 70s Hondo and I would assume it had those exact pups in it. From my recollection your description is dead on. My biggest decision now is which project to put them in. I was going to test them on an old squire and if they sounded good might use them either in a 73 strat I have that is pickup-less..or possibly in a relic project. I even thought of using them in a tele since I have a crap load of tele bodies but people are telling me it is some kind of "sacrilege" to put anything other then a tele pickup in the bridge position. But if I use those for anything I want to use all 3. Decisions, decisions.

If it were me, I'd Stick 'em in that '73 just to give them a test drive. It won't hurt anything and it will give you a better idea of what you might wanna do with them.
Peace.

I just might do that. I know I am not going to spend 1000 bucks for original pups for that so might as well make it interesting. If they don't work out in the 73 I will pay a couple hundred for custom wounds and use those oddball pups in something else.
