i was just looking at a choice of strats in HSS configuration and one model really caught my interest: Guitarguitar dealer select '59 in natural finish (http://www.fender.com/guitars/stratocaster/guitarguitar-dealer-select-1959-nos-stratocaster-hss-rosewood-neck-aged-natural/). beautiful guitar and the US$ price is reasonable (1,763), so I go to the site of that UK dealer (http://www.guitarguitar.co.uk/electric_guitars_detail.asp?stock=14021110483831) and... F**K ME! the price is £2,500!!! this is just ridiculous, Fender quotes a £1053 (converted) price, so thats what.... £1,450 in taxes and shipping ??? no way!
am I missing something here?

I'm angry

I know what you mean, that does seem ridiculous.

I just checked String direct (London) and that have a 59 sss in 3 tone sunburst for 1749.00 pounds.

And if you try to import one for yourself ... well, best you sit down! On 31/03/2014 I looked at importing a $1500 Strat. The "translation" after import duty was
$1500 –> £2318 !! (yes, first number in dollars, second in UK sterling). Exchange rate = 1.66 USD to £1

UK Customs valued the guitar at £1863
Duty & VAT was £455.37

(I'm not sure if transport costs needed to be added or were in the "landed price" of £1863 (I doubt it).

wouldn't it be cheaper to fly to US with a squier bullet in your luggage, and come back with Fender Select? I always think about doing that...
I did that with DSLR camera last time I was in Canada. I bought an expensive model, threw away the box and hanged it on my neck, went through customs in Toronto and back home with a big grin on my face

I recommend Ishibashi, I've never paid GST & Duty on what they send. Mind, you should look at buying used. Customshop aren't worth paying for new.. That way you can say it's used and you shouldn't pay VAT

I agree, the prices are insane here over the pond. It really is almost cheaper to go there and to buy it in the US, but you'd have to buy at least a relic'd model and claim it was used (that's what a friend of mine did  ) so you don't have to pay VAT.

Yeah, considering the amount of them out there on ebay, it would be wise to explore that option

Do you mean you'd actually rob the Ministry of the Exchequer?

If all UK subjects did that, who'd pay for the Royals and their profligacy?

Legend has it that there is a customs official at Heathrow who can spot a vintage Fender at 20 yards. They're wise to that trick!

As for the price difference, guitars imported from the US have to have import duty of 3.7% and VAT of 20% added cumulatively. This is charged on the sale price and the shipping cost. By the time you've paid all that the cost still often works out less than the price in UK stores which is doubtless part of the reason Fender dealers in the US are prohibited from selling internationally.

So-called "grey imports" can be a lot cheaper for US made goods bought in the EU but you will inevitably lose all warranties and after-sales service. Unless you want to ship the guitar back to the dealer and pay for the return cost. And hope that it doesn't need to be shipped a third time.

Monabri should have challenged the HMRC valuation and pricing, around £1200 would be more correct. There are several US 8bay companies who pay the duty & tax as part of the deal. It's called the Global Postage Programme. One example I found today is a $1599.99 Am Deluxe Strat Plus which works out at £1180 delivered to the UK

It isn't the UK only that charge excessive prices for these . Thomann in Germany are similar prices.
It has to be Fender pricing strategy.

Until someone from the tax ministry reads this.......Best to not talk about breaking the law on a public forum.

Just some free advice.....

Quite a bit further down than the heart, I'd say - attached right behind the leg of Europe. :p
