I have a 2006 Lite Ash Strat. I bought Fender Locking Tuners for it and they are too big. Mine has the two guide pins but are smaller. Mine is round on the end away from the pins. The ones I bought say they are for American Deluxe part number 099-0818-100. Does anyone know about the ones to fit mine, part number or anything like that.

The locking tuners you bought are only drop-in replacements for USA or MIM Fenders with the sealed tuners.

I thought the Lite Ash models used Gotoh-style tuners with a screw instead of guide pins, but I'll admit I haven't seen one in person in several years - back when they were still made in Korea. It sounds like the tuners have changed since then.

Take a look at the round-bodied Schaller tuners, or possibly try looking at something from Grover. Also it seems like the Kluson name has been revived and they are making modern-style tuners that are Schaller-like.

I've got a Special Edition Lite Ash Tele. To the best of my knowledge they were all made in Korea, though as always I stand to be corrected (especially by John C :) ).

I just went and double-checked, and I must admit by eye I can't tell who the manufacturer of the tuners is. They could be Ping or Gotoh or someone else I don't know about - they are essentially a generic modern style non-locking tuner.

I have my Tele set up very nicely at present and I'm a bit loathed to start dismantling a machinehead just to measure the shaft. Though I will if it would help and you ask me very nicely...

Still. There are essentially two sizes of tuner, so-called "modern" spec that fits a 10mm / 13/32" peghole, and "vintage" spec 11/32" / 8.73mm. If your new locking tuners are too big for the holes, then it means the holes must be the smaller 11/32" ones. Which surprises me a bit with this style of tuner, but there ya go...

Gotoh make a massive range of tuners. One of them is this vintage-look locking tuner for 11/32" pegholes:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tuners/Guit ... uners.html

That would be one way to go.

Though in your place I certainly wouldn't bother. It would mean drilling new fixing holes and taking plenty of care to make sure the new tuners go on absolutely straight. Nothing says DIY botch-job like crooked tuners. And far as I'm concerned, the tuners on the Lite Ash guitars may be generic but they do their task absolutely fine. I see no need to replace them, let alone with locking ones.

But folks are allowed to have different tastes on that.

Word of caution. Someone will likely post on this thread advising you to drill out the pegholes to 10mm to fit the new tuners. Someone might even say they've done it themselves and it turned out just fine. Well, good luck to them - but don't try it. I've seen so many pegheads ruined by redrilling of the tuner holes and you only have to drift the tiniest bit to spoil them forever. I've even seen properly equipped well-respected luthiers screw up this task - somewhere on Stew-Mac's site there is one of their Trade Secrets pages where Erick Coleman drills out the holes on a bass guitar using all the right gear (high quality drill press, etc) and gets them so wrong the guitar just looks awful.

The absolute only right way to enlarge pegholes is with a tool called a "cello peghole reamer". They do a brilliant job - and they are very expensive for what they are. I own one, and I wouldn't dream of doing this task any other way.

Failing that, I'd leave this Strat well alone. It's a very nice guitar bone stock, after all!

Cheers - C

Buy the hipshot locking tuners. You need drill nothing if you don't want to with them.

Here are some pictures of Fender Schaller locking tuners. The Fender Ping locking tuners are the same. They will fit MIA and MIM Fender Standard Stratocasters.

Here is a set of Fender Schaller Locking Tuner that I installed on one of my MIM Standard Stratocasters. They are a drop in replacement. No drilling or modifications are needed.

I have also installed a set of Fender Taiwan/Ping Locking Tuners in another MIM Stratocaster I have. The Fender Taiwan/Ping tuners work just as good as the German made Fender Schaller Locking tuners. I like Fender Schaller Locking tuners better but they are getting harder to find and the cost is getting too high.

Hi otis66: that is exactly what mccovan has got and he says they don't fit the pegholes on the Lite Ash Strat.

Cheers - C

It occurs to me that the Indonesian squier neck I bought off of ebay had funky tuner holes, too. They looked right but were not spaced correctly. Beyond that, once I filled them and drilled out new ones, I found that the headstock was too thick for the fender tuners. Odd neck.

The Fender Ping/Taiwan tuners are made to the same specs as the Fender?Schaller tuners made in Germany. Ping also make tuners for Asain guitars that look like Schallers but the specs are a little smaller. The fender Lite Ash Stratocaster would have the Ping Asain tuners. My Yamaha Pacifica J112 also has the Ping Asain tuners.

Here is the Ping asain tuners used on asain guitars. The Ping Asain tuners are not bad tuners.

Ping also makes Grover tuners you see on Martin HD-28 or Martin Standard guitars. Ping makes the tuners for Taylor guitars.
