Hi.

I’m looking to replace pickups on my Stratocaster. I’m looking for a tone similiar to John Mayer’s. The Fender Big Dipper-pickups are nowhere to be found on the internet. I know that the Big Dippers are based on the Texas Special-pickups, but my question is; What pickup-set would sound most like the Big Dippers?

Cheers

Did you look on the internet or just ebay?

How about a loaded, you choose the color, pickguard for $239.98, free shipping, on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Artist-Pickguard-pickups-Patterns/dp/B00HTBJSTC

Here's a used set for $169.98, free shipping, on Twilight Guitars:
http://www.twilightguitars.com/product-p/fender-jm-pickup-set.htm

There are a bunch of less expensive "mid-scoop" sets on ebay.

There's a lot more than a set of pickups to Mayer's tone. Most tone seekers ignore the expensive (Good Amps) and difficult (learning to play) requirements.

Scooped mid-range pickups notwithstanding, be prepared to invest in the gauntlet of amplifiers and other signal chain gear he's run through in your pursuit of his tone. It would be congratulatory for most, if not all artists had a website like David Gilmour's: http://www.gilmourish.com

Close but probably no cigar. He wants what Mayer has. Mayer may be using something completely different by this time judging from recent photos I've seen of him.

Do you recall the hotly debated issue of the polepiece placement on a photo of The Black One that wasn't exactly the same as those on the neck pickup of the Tribute guitar. When Fender ran the Crossroads Sun Strat project they built Mayer his own version of the 'Clapton' guitar using Mayer's neck carve, fret board material and pickups. They might have even scrubbed the midboost for him.

It's tiresome chasing these ghosts thinking you're playing the same gear they are. My first encounter with something like that was 'back in the days of Daniel Boone' with the Gibson P-90 'dog-ear' neck pickup on Eddie Cochran's Gretsch 6120. It had me scratching my head until I finally came to learn that these guys play 'burgerking' gear. They have it 'their way'.

Last communication with him, several months ago, he was alive and well, busy with all the issues facing a married man. He's shut down his FB page save for those things related to his music. I sent him an email about 2 weeks ago but haven't heard back. Somehow, the address which he gave me as working still returns 'undeliverable'.

It might be easier to get a set of CS 69's and then use a boss eq-7 to dial in the tone you want.
In my guitar I have a 69 in the neck and bridge and a fat 50's reveres wound so I have humbucking.
I can't say I have ever tried to nail mr Mayer's tone pre-say, but it's a good solid blues tone all the same.

I read somewhere that JM dippers were basically underwound 57/62's

No great shakes. IMHO he was an SRV clone like many others...KWS, Bramhall, to name two.

Keep in mind he plays different guitars for every song. If you want his "tone" you need a Dumble.

He's right, he does switch guitars which is a great point I myself looked over. On his "The Big Rundown" video on Youtube it goes over his gear. He's always been using his Dumble which SRV used and a Dumble clone a think, as well as his signature two rock and array of pedals.
The amps mainly and pedals provide his tone. He's been running a double set of Keeley Katana's.

I'd have to say it is largely his amps and then his pedals/set up since he switches guitars just about every song and they all sound amazing.
