Thanks for all the replies, gents. Despite Fender's MIM and Charvel offerings, I am somewhat surprised they aren't making an American Standard or American Deluxe iteration right now of this guitar.

They did an American Deluxe Strat HSS with a Mini Floyd Rose locking tremolo in 1998. Discontinued in 2007.

Love that guitar, but probably one of the most disappointing Floyd Rose units ever put on a Strat.. Reason why I say that is because there is a widespread belief (or myth) that locking tuners offer superior tuning stability- much like a locking nut.

That certainly ain't true- they are quick and easy for string changes eliminating wrapping around the string posts, that's all. But to be 100% effective & superior tuning stability like a Floyd Rose Original, this guitar (American Deluxe Strat with Mini Floyd) needed to have a locking nut. The LSR on this guitar was a little pointless matched with the locking tuners, as it is the tension imbalance on the strings between the nut & tuners, vs. Bridge and nut that really kill perfect 'return to pitch' tuning under moderate to heavy Trem use.

I don't care what anyone says- locking tuners don't give you Floyd rose-like tuning stability with dive-bombs & then return to pitch. They are only there for quick & easy string changes.

Still, a great unit- one of the favourites among people. Just not 100% effective & quite possibly one of the worst Floyd Bridges ever made -IMO :)

Since Blertles doesn't care what anyone says, this is for the rest of you:
Locking tuners used correctly means you don't wind the string around the post a bunch of times (or even once). There's less slack that can expand. If the nut is well lubricated, locking tuners also work exactly like locking nuts, just higher up. Think about it - there's nothing magical about whether the locking happens 2mm above the nut as in a locking nut, or 2" above the nut.

Most of all, I love my locking tuners because they make it easier to tune - when a string is sharp, I can tune down to the correct pitch, not having to do "tune even further down than you need to go, then tune up, then pull string, then up again". There's no spiral around the tuning post that has to be retensioned.

But to get full satisfaction, you need to lubricate your nuts.

Do locking nuts essentially mandate the use of fine tuners? How much adjustment can be made with fine tuners before intonation is broken?

No. Good locking tuners tend to have a higher gear ratio, which makes fine tuning easier.

Yeah I agree with you arth but you also have to remember some heavy users will experience strings popping out of the nut when they are fully slackened.

I've got 3 strats with locking tuners and they all do that. They are good for restringing though- very convenient. But they also have 'deluxe' bridges, not the locking type above.

Seymour Duncan had a blog that detailed the argument, I'll find it and post it here- it's an interesting read :)

Yeah, there are differences in locking tuners, and how far down they have their hole. Those who don't have the hole lowered to compensate for not bringing the strings further down can be problematic when slackening the strings too much (like serious drop tuning).
I've never had a problem with Schaller ones, though.

Perhaps guitars with locking tuners with a "high" hole should come with a six-string string tree above the nut - that would fix that problem, at least (and reduce ringing), and not be as much fiddling as locking nuts.

Unrelated, but I'm gassing for one of these:

Essentially a Strat but still nothing like a Fender Floyd Rose Classic Stratocaster 8)
