I was researching this subject a lot before i bought my Fender Stratocaster. I really disagree with people who believe that single coil pickups can't do metal and other hi-gain stuff.

I recorded and mixed a little cover to prove that. Cheers!

I think Yngwie is the single-coil flag bearer, right? No one would ever say his tone is not metal enough (at least I wouldn't...).

I have always felt single-coils can do heavy tones. But that being said, humbuckers definitely give a "thicker" tone than single coils. I have two single-coil guitars (both Fender) and three humbucker guitars (two Gibsons and one Fender) -- that basic assumption is very clear across the board for my setup, anyway. But ... "thicker" is not always better. I love the heavy tones I get through my Strat w/ Tex Mex pups.

+1

I've never played any garage grunge, shoe-gaze goth, speed-shred metal or those genres requiring chronic dropped-D tunings and a stack of Marshall muscle but I can pull off some credible renditions of Guns 'N' Roses, Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and the like using a Strat with single-coils. The right amp and some decent pedal effects play a significant role of course......

Yea, single coils and heavy riffing go together if you believe.

While I have no doubts about a single coils ability to do a heavy riff, it would have been nice in the OP's video to see where he had the selector set on.

He could have a reveres wound middle and using setting 2 or 4.....

You are right! I forgot about that, so I have updated the video description. Distorted guitars were recorded with the bridge position pickup.
