I have seen several folks on here talk about how much that they enjoy playing the Highway Ones. What is it about them that is so special?
I am a new player and Strat owner (2008 MIM HSS). As such, I am trying to learn as much as I can about them. I cant say enough about how much I like mine so far.

At some point If I want to buy another guitar, what are the "must have" features/options that the Highway Ones, and others offer over the MIM models? I am curious about personal opinions, not advertising hype.

Well, I don't know about other folks, but what I like about my HWY 1:

The weight of it (that alder body does weigh a bit, but it's a nice tone).
The larger headstock on the neck.
The jumbo frets.
The wider fingerboard.
The hot-rodded Alcino III pups.

At the end of the day? I dunno, man...it's just a really well-built, solid guitar. It feels like it's not going to let you down at a gig...it's not flakey or temperamental at all.

In terms of my HWY 1 and upgrading it? Black pickguard, black pickup covers, black knobs. (I've got one of those wine colored models.) That's about it. I was toying with putting a SD Texas Tone in the neck, but I don't think I'm even going to do that.

As far as the MiM models go....they're nice guitars. (I also think the Squire Deluxe models give 'em a run for their money.) The fingerboards are not as wide, the hardware for the bridge and the keys are different...but they aren't going to let you down.

I just think as far as that HWY 1 goes, Fender outdid itself in terms of the quality of the product and the amount of money they're asking. As stated, a really solid, well-built guitar that doesn't mess around with anything but the basics.

I sure do like mine.

The Highway Ones seem to be the place between the MIM and the MIA. What about the jumbo frets? Is it easier to bend the strings over them?

I like them. You don't have to press down quite as hard, and what is a bonus with the HWY 1 is the wider fingerboard (allowing you more room to bend the strings.)

As for the jumbo frets? I liked 'em so so much I had them installed in my 1968 MiJ reissue. It was due for a fret job after 15 years, but yeah...it made a big difference...even with the thinner fingerboard on that axe. (in fact, it's probably the fastest neck I have right now out of any of my guitars.)

A lot of this depends on your hand, though...and your style. Some people don't like the wide fingerboards. You never know....You may like the MiM with standard frets better...or a Squier....(And yes, I keep popping that name in there because I think their Deluxe strat is just as good as the MiM Fender models I've played...in fact, IMHO the bridges are better on those guitars in terms of hardware.)

You know....this is just my opinion...

But if you're looking to upgrade because you're looking for something specific on that HWY 1?

I think with a different pickguard it's already cut for a humbucker pickup in the bridge position. Other than that....eh, I can't think of anything this guitar may need. The pickups are good (I am actually keeping the single coil pup in the bridge position because it offers a vintage sound), the hardware is good, the construction is solid....

I played one a while back, and they seem to be built like tanks, although the neck as a tad too thin for my liking.

tone/playability/feel the highway one upgrade are in my opinion
the best strat out there today. MUCH better than the american standards.
70's 60's to todays tones this strat does it all unlike the american standards. i have seen post on other sites were they have compard the
highway ones upgrades late 2006 to 2007 the the signature and custom shop strats.

The Sentry covered just about all of the features.

Except for vintage-style bridge, no bi-flex truss rod, and no micro-tilt neck angle adjustment.
The Grease-Bucket Tone system is a nice touch too.

They are a great value USA-made strat.
