I bought a new strat and at the store I asked him to flush the bridge to the body and lower the strings. It feels good but there is one problem. When I play for exempel the 8th fret on it it feels a little bit dull. It's like it does'nt ring as freely as the other strings. I've tried to adjust the action so it was higher but it did'nt make any differens.

Please help! It was expensive...

Could be any number of things.

Dead string and Neck relief adjustment are 2 that come to mind.

Chet's advice is good. First put in a new string. Did that fix it?

Next. Problems at a particular position, I'd want to begin by checking that fret and the one above it. kinda crude, but a start would be to lay a steel ruler edge on along the frets and see if the 8th is low or the 9th is high.

Eliminate that, then move on to the next possibilities.

Well the guitar is brand new so the string should'nt be dead. Or could it?

Maybe it's the neck relief but how do you adjust that. I it the screw on the head?

Then buy The Guitar Player Repair Guide by Dan Erlewine. Best few bucks you'll ever spend. All your answers are in there.

Yes, the string could be dead.

I have pulled a new set right out of the package and installed them and found a dead string.

Hi Jacobthebluesman,

Which model did you buy? Does it have the Microtilt feature? If you don't know what this is it is a hole in your neckplate that will allow you to use a hex key to make minute adjustments of the angle of the neck. If you have one first losen your neck bolts about a quarter to a half a turn then insert the hex key into the hole. Since the angle of your neck seems to be too far back, turn the hex key counter-clockwise to lower the angle of the bottom neck bolts. Tighten all of your neck bolts and try it out. Repeat if needed. Make small adjustment at a time and test often as you go.
