Not at all, no recession in Australia (very healthy economy with steady growth), nor there was a recession in 2008 .. so its not global.

Australia did indeed buck the worldwide trend, as did Brazil, China and India. Most of Europe went through a very rough time with countries only recently emerging from recession.

Thanks Obama.

That seems a bit steep Ceri, at least here in the colonies.

Was there something unusual about it to justify such a premium?

Well, guesswork here, but I'm imagining a combination of scarcity then and popularity now. Maybe.

Jaguars were always available this side of the pond but not widely favoured back in those days, give or take a few examples (pummelling my memory on that). In recent years though they seem to be one of the guitars of choice amongst a certain young indie set, and genuine old ones appear to be all the rage, judging by what I see on the smaller stages around town. Lost count of the number of Jags and thinline Teles I'm seeing kids beating, and not many of 'em are the modern reissues.

So, passing fashion is probably the explanation, I suppose.

Still, my perception is that price is a bit off the top in these parts.

Anyway, if you're in the US and you've an old Jag or similar to sell maybe it's a good moment to consider offering it further afield. Healthier prices to be had, perhaps...?

Cheers - C

BTW, that last point raises a wider question in my mind. It always used to be the case that the highest prices for vintage Fenders and Gibsons were to be found in North America, on those brands' home turf. The assumption was that the European vintage market lagged a bit by comparison.

I wonder if that position is reversed at the moment? (If so, I'm definitely not getting into political discussions over why... :) )

That www.vintageandrareguitars.com outfit I linked to is one of the benchmark vintage sellers this side of the pond. I wonder how their prices look to those who know the American market. (Tip: £1.00 = $1.68 at present. Or thereabouts.)

Cheers - C

It might also be that the kids there have been priced out of the vintage Strat market. That same phenomenon occurred here, beginning in the early/mid '70s. A quick check of prices on Ebay show that vintage Jags and Jazzmasters remain within the limits of sanity while Strats and Teles are still, relatively speaking, astronomical. There are bargains to be had, most notably with the '70s-era Strats, but serious shoppers need to be "quick on the trigger" because speculators are always lurking about.

There are SO MANY good guitars out there right now (from Fender especially)... the new American Vintage series, the Custom Shop guitars, etc... you can find pretty much anything that you want spec wise...

I played a '62 Strat at GC in NYC recently and was not impressed... it seemed crudely made and heavy... I could buy 5 of the new CS '54 Heavy Relics for the price they were asking... They are making them much better today than they were back then... the attention to detail and the tolerances are much tighter now...

I'd much rather have a guitar that was perfect as far as frets, neck shape, weight, pickups, etc. than one vintage piece that looks cool and has the "hype" but is lacking in other playability factors...

Bingo! Putting "mojo" aside, I'd much rather play a modern instument. So you won't see me bidding on a $10k vintage insturment even if they drop the price significantly. And, I should be the demographic that is keeping the vintage market going. Maybe if I was a collector instead of a player, I'd have a different viewpoint. So, my Guild Starfire will probably be the only vintage instrument that I own.

It's all a matter of self-perception. Is one a fashionista who merely wants an attractive vinty guitar as wall decoration for home or office, or is one a committed guitarist to whom playability and tone is paramount? The physical parameters are not necessarily exclusive to one another but the simple fact is, many of those old guitars were pooches. They may be in beautiful cosmetic shape but it could be because they fretted and sounded like crap so no one wanted to play them. Their frustrated owners stuck them in a closet or under a bed where they languished for several decades until somebody remembered them and put them up for sale. No matter -- the intervening years of storage cannot improve the fundamentals of a poorly-built instrument.

So you played one "bad" example of a 1962 Strat and now you figure they all like that ?
