Not sure of the reason this is happening, but pre-CBS and transition (first year CBS- 1965) Strats are falling perilously close to the $10K price point.

This is a 1965 Fender Strat now on ebay:

Price is $12,000. No takers yet, and the owner may have to discount at some point. Why have Strat prices fallen so much? The days of hopefully selling above $100,000 are gone, except for a few cases like Gruhn selling a first serial number model, or the auction of Bob Dylan's Newport Folk Festival Strat. The Gibson Les Paul Standard (Burst) model is still holding at prices above $100K.

Both custom shop Fenders and Gibsons are getting closer in sound to vintage guitars. Gibson is probably closer, but there are Fender custom shop and Masterbuilt guitars that sound good enough live that most listeners can't tell the difference between the median vintage guitar and the select modern version. This could be golden opportunity to add a vintage guitar to your collection, just because of this price/perception shift.

Newsflash: the recession is global. Your president isn't in charge of the rest of the world and pre-CBS guitar prices have dropped everywhere.

Well it IS an ECONOMIC question and economies ARE tied to politics...but in the Strats case it is probably just the fluctuation of tastes...Strats were all the rage at one time, then Gibson Les Pauls started to rule the roost and prices dropped and rose accordingly. This is just another one of those times. And besides they are fricking guitars NOT investment opportunities and they were built to be played, not locked up in a vault waiting for the price to go up.

So lighten up and drop the Debbie Downer thing

Hello Mark. I don't really follow vintage guitar pricing, but it had been my foggy perception recently that '60s Fenders seemed surprisingly lower than I'd expected. Not just Strats - I was looking at a '65 Jaguar the other day here in the UK which is going for £3395 / $5700, which seemed more affordable than I'd have imagined.

http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/pr ... er-jaguar/

It used to be that vintage guitar dealers marked '60s Fenders POA out of embarrassment at how outrageously high the price might seem. Perhaps at the moment it is because they are uncomfortable at how low it has become!

A consequence of the place we're at in the economic cycle, no doubt. As you say, it possibly makes it a good time to buy, if collectables are your thang.

Les Pauls will always be considerably higher, simply because of relative scarcity. Though watch out: a few years ago I read in the guitar press that there were already about twice as many 1958 and 1959 Les Pauls in the world than Gibson had actually manufactured in those years. That number will only have increased since. Lotta bear traps waiting out there...

Cheers - C

That seems a bit steep Ceri, at least here in the colonies.

Was there something unusual about it to justify such a premium?

Not at all, no recession in Australia (very healthy economy with steady growth), nor there was a recession in 2008 .. so its not global.

Not one to ignore price disparities, I jumped on this 1965 Fender Jaguar at Grinning Elk.

And it was significantly below Ceri's quoted price, but we in the USA have distinct advantages, like the Federal Reserve.

The 2008 recession did hit vintage guitar prices hard.
While the stock market has recovered nicely since 2009, the vintage market hasn't. I guess it was a pretty big bubble.

That's good for guys wanting to buy a vintage guitar.
