Check out this video. Eric Johnson talks about a signature strat with a rosewood finger board that was due for release in January '08. He shows and plays a prototype model with a rosewood fingerboard and a bound neck.

Tasty link, man, thanks.

I always liked bound fingerboards on Fenders. Few people on the planet know Strats better than EJ from a player's perspective, so if he says it's good, it's good.

Looks like another classic about to arrive.

...It seems like a great strat, and IMHO will probably have similar features as the current EJ. In the vid, there's no string tree on the headstock, so I guess that means staggered tuners.

That's a sweet sounding Strat! Then again, Eric Johnson could make a 2x4 with barbed wire sound good... :P

It is a pretty guitar. I'm not a fan of the binding though. I'll stick to my maple necked EJ. Thats what a 57 should look like in my book.

Personally, I would've actually liked to see the current version of the EJ with a 60's style neck (ie truss rod adjust at heel, rosewood fingerboard) on it as the rosewood model.
..I'd keep the rest the same.

..Still though, the model in the video looks and sounds very nice.

I don't know, I wasn't sure when I first saw the binding, but it's growing on me now :) Not sure I'd buy one but it sure is pretty :D

That's a very cool Strat because I love the color and I like to play rosewood. Going back to the original colors from the automotive colors Fender used is really a great idea. I also like the way the man plays. Excellent licks. I'm not sure the binding is a done deal at all. He said they might do it. Imho, it looks cool and is distinctive, but may not be a great idea from the point of view of durability. It is authentic because he said they really did the binding for a few months in the 1960s. For me, the essence of Fender is the simplicity of the musical instrument that gives a guitar player what we need and outperforms the most intricate designs from guitar companies that design for themselves as much as musicians. The binding goes against that theme . . . but looks cool. The very flat curve in the Eric Johnson series, which is better for lead and similar to what Vai does, should be interesting to try out.
