I love Fender guitars, particularly the look and playability. However, I've been after a different sound these last few months.

I've been playing a lot of power pop and songs by bands with a thicker overdriven/distorted rhythm sound in many songs (think Matthew Sweet's "Sick of Myself" and Fountains of Wayne's "Stacey's Mom"). I can get close to the sound I'm looking for with my Mahogany Telebration Telecaster (Fender Enforcer Humbucker in the bridge) with the plexi setting (voice #8) on my Super Champ XD.

However, I have two strats I'd like to be able to use to get close to that sound also. I don't really want to swap pickups. What do you suggest? Right now I play my strats through a TS9 Tube Screamer into a Blues Junior - not really the sound I want.

What amps or pedals do you think would get my strats closest to this sound?

Hi there.

You can get really caught up in buying gear to chase a tone.
What I would suggest is you start with a Boss EQ-7. It does have a boost, but you can use this to mold your tone over a wider band width.

That, and practice.

Try a Korg Pandora Stomp.

Try using and experimenting with the guitars controls, sometimes turning the guitars Tone control back somewhere between 6 and 8 will thicken a Strat nicely and take some ice pick out of the tone, especially if you want a thicker and warmer OD. Another thing is to drop the Volume control on the guitar back, this also can thicken the tone somewhat, between that and increasing the pedals Volume control there is a whole range of different tones which can be conjured up. Maybe you've already tried experimenting with this type of approach, but I have seen a lot of players miss out on the tonal variation built right into their guitar because they just peg all the controls to 10 and try to compensate with effects.
