I was looking at the wiring diagram for Texas special pickups.

I am putting them in my Strat and I have 500k pots to go with them. The wiring diagram from fender only shows one cap. and hardly no grounds for the pots. Does anyone else have any better suggestions/wiring diagrams for use with a 500k pot? I also have a push/pull pot for my bridge pickup so I can have two extra switching positions.

Currently, it sounds pretty good, I haven't cranked the volume up too high yet, but I am not exactly sure what caps. would do in this situation.

Thanks for the help.

I would probably use .022uf caps.

Yes, but what I am asking is where? On all three pots? On all three pots, and in between, etc?

I was looking at the greasebucket circuitry and they are not as high output as the texas specials yet they have Caps all over.

The greasebucket is and entirely different animal.

id like to thank everyone for the links and helpful responses. I feel I need to clarify.

I just took off my 07 greasebucket from the input jack from my highway one. it is still in tact. I bought a new pickguard and texas specials. and assembled the pickguard using dimarzio 500k custom taper pots. it is wired for 7 way switching with the push/pull on the bridge tone and that works fine. I also only have 1 cap on the neck tone control.

my problems: volume knob makes no difference in sound output from the guitar (cant make silent or louder.)

my questions:
would It be better to not use custom taper pots? what's the difference? (what does the customtaper do? I only have a general idea.)

were the 500ks a bad idea? I know singles usually use 250.

I was debating on mimicking the greasebucket diagram (since I have one sitting beside me for clarity) but was wondering if anyone could help me in deciding if I should keep the 500k custom tapers or use different pots. also, should I try to rewire my new pickguard based off of my old greasebucket? I don't mind experimenting, I have my old pickguard I could swap in, but id rather try to use the texas specials.

thanks for the help, and I apologize for the poor punctuation this was posted from my phone.

There are a lot of wiring diagrams at www.guitarelectronics.com Go ahead and experiment.

Double check your wiring if your volume control isn't doing anything. Also check for cold solders.

I notice an EXTREMELY SMALL difference in volume when I twist it. It is NOTHING like it was before, however. In fact, in the 0 position, there is still tons of sound coming from the guitar.

I guess my newest question would be, how to custom taper pots differ from 'regular' (?) pots? This could be my problem, as I used custom taper pots for all 3 knobs.

That doesn't sound right. 0 should be 0.

I always use audio taper pots by CTS

I've read a bit about them, what do those do that would differ from the custom taper pots?

I would call my tech/installer but I think he is away from the shop for the evening, but if I had to buy some new pots, I'd actually like to know what to look for this time, haha. Oops.

Silly me, I was excited to get my new pickups in that I bought the first 500k pots I could find. You guys think 500k may be overkill for the texas specials? I am going to wire it up just like the greasebucket design I took off and if I should just change back to 250k pots I wouldn't mind picking up some new ones. Right now I have 500k custom taper on the volume and two tone controls.

Not sure about the custom taper. I like audio taper as they are smother as you turn them up or down.
Personally I would go for 250k's for it. My second choice would be 500k for the volume and 250k for the tone.
